The sales are pretty showing. I'm glad that these American sales can be shown to fully represent what videogames are doing here and not just in Japan.

Looks like 6 years may be too long for a generation. Xbox has some strong software right now, but even Xbox owners are complaining about the lack of software in general and is also at an install base disadvantage of 1:4.5. So to sell almost 2/3 as much as the martket leader is a huge change from the beginning of this generation. They really have picked up momentum and left Nintendo in the dust in the home console race. While the holiday season will be fine for Sony it does look like PS2 sales have slowed some. It also shows how much momentum MS has gained. That should add some spice to 2006 ;) More competition = better pricing and games :D

Looking at all the standard devices (PS2, GCN, Xbox, PSP, GBA, NDS) , it seems most of them are being starved for quality content at this point. I believe if the PS2, PSP, and NDS would have substantially better sales in this period if they had more / better games.

So we cannot make too much of this. But it is interesting none-the-less.

7 Microsoft (Corp) $14,931,890 4.7%

:oops:

:shakes head:

While I am not too happy with the fact Nintendo's home console platform is not going the direction to provide me (specifically me) the games I want, they obviously are doing a LOT right.

Wait... platform revenues are consoles sold right? MS profits off their consoles? I thought they were still losing money per console. Or is this gross?

No platform reviews are the number of software sales for that respective console or handheld. The hardware sales are here.

PSP = 250,000
PS2 = 273,000
Xbox = 129,000
GCN = 50,000
GBA/DS = 279,000

Amusingly, my browser screen was sized so that I only saw the first section, and I was like "holy crap, the Xbox swept the top 20!" ;)

It confirms the latest trends.

PS2 is still king of the hill, but shows signs of slowing, especially on the software sales side. Almost seems like PS2 owners are more starved for new hardware and games than Sony expected. Guess Sony fans can thank MS for "forcing" Sony not to sit around even longer before finally moving on.

GC is turning into what N64 was, a console pretty much only for playing Nintendo games. And that isn't a bad thing, as sales show that Nintendo is HUGE as a first party publisher! That alone should make any people who are worried about Revolution shut up. The Nintendo brand is alive and well and even though it might be somewhat of a niche, its big enough for them to make a living for at least another generation or two.

Xbox hardware sales are not what they could be, hope they know what they're doing by phasing out Xbox production so early and focusing on 360. Software sales are very strong however, Xbox is moving quite a bit more software/unit than PS2 or GC at this point.

Actually, if you look at the charts you'll realize that Nintendo's software share is healthy only because of GBA/NDS. Their Cube software sales are horrible. In fact, it's all pretty much Pokemon Emerald's doing.

...across three platforms. I think Nintendo can make money on a console that's basically there just for Nintendo games, but they just don't seem to be selling like they used to. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course. I don't think Nintendo has had a Mario 64 type selling game this gen. SSBM is probably the closest. Not that N games sell poorly, but they seem to be selling less than they used to which is a bad trend to extend to the Rev.

Well I'm happy to see my PSP doing so good. Combine the hardware unit sales, with the videogame sells, with the UMD sells and you have a big future in your hands. :D

Great job Sony now give us more games. :devilish:

Can anyone pin down a fairly accurate figure of the total worldwide XBox units sold since introduction?

Accurate?? Ehehe... well, I'll say this at least... at mid January Xbox was clocking in at just under 20 million and from what I can see across the net, it seems like MS has sold an additional 2-3 million units... so what ~22-23 million units since launch?

I find it pretty interesting that despite PS3 having 350% the installed base of the XBOX(90mil vs 20mil), the PS3 version of Star Wars 3 only sells 30% more copies than the XBOX version

i think it's a more accurate representation of market share than total units sold.

Or that the PS2 has a wider demographic with wildly differing game tastes? Plus for correctness sake, the figures are for NA only, so the installed base isn't 90:20, but whatever US sales for PS2 and XB are (40:15 ?), though that doesn't impact your argument. ;)

I think it has more to do with the fact that XBOX owners buy twice as many games/system compared to PS2 owners.

That's a stat J. Allard mentioned in an interview.

That and PS2 are more prone to failiure than XBOX, and they've been out oinger so there are more people who bought 2 or 3 replacement consoles. Which makes the whole systems sold number not very useful.

A final reason I would guess, people who have both systems buy the XBOX version obviously.

I think all those are much more realistic than PS2 owners have "varying tastes" whatever that means. If you have any proof of the demographics of the 2 syetems I'd like to see a link. it' my hunch that both systems share the same core demographic.

Anywyas, my point was that systems sold is a crappy metric for determining market share, and trying to guess what Dev's will and won't support. Current game sales are much more re;levant, and here, the PS2 only shows a slight margin. Nowhere near the 3-4times you might suspect by their total systems sold.

I just wonder how this will affect next-gen, and who developers decide to support. PS2 doesn't have the giant lead in software sales some might think, and that's all Dev's really care about, total copies sold.

With it'sa 6-12month headstart, and excellent software sales #'s/console, X360 may be the system with the bigger selection of games this time around.

That and Xbox has a different demographic than the ps2/GC. NA Xbox owners tend to be in their mid-late 20's and early 30's. That demographic has more disposable cash. Xbox also tends to attract alot of hardcores/nerds and people that want "the best" system techincally for their $5 billion dollar HDTV. That's why the attachment rate for software is higher on the xbox (per capita). Xbox owners generally have more cash and are into gaming more. Hence buy more games. GC has the grade school to highschool, and nostalgia demographic. Alot of people that can;t buy their own games. PS2 has very eclectic crowd theres the "everyone has console now so I better not look unhip" or "I needed a cheap DVD player 5 years ago but I rarely play games", but then you also have hardcore Japanese RPG players and the people that just trust the Sony brand.

I know these are generalizations.

I don't know if ur argument is 100% accurate.
Lets look at this way.
In terms of hardcore gamers, by looking at the sales stat, Sony doesn't have lot more in terms of hardcore gamers than MS since PS2 SW only sold 30% more than XBox version..
But, if u look at the other games sales numbers
PS2 MIDNIGHT CLUB 3: DUB $7,345,949 150,470
XBX MIDNIGHT CLUB 3: DUB $3,783,276 77,259

PS2 MVP BASEBALL 2005 $2,496,804 83,391
XBX MVP BASEBALL 2005 $1,117,114 37,352

Casual gamers are slower in terms of adopting new games but PS2 sales numbers are pulling away from Xbox sales numbers. In most multiplatform games, PS2 version stays longer on the chart and have lot higher number of games sold than Xbox version of same game, so systems sold is not that "inaccurate" way of determining console's popularity as Allard wanted us to believe.
With Xbox having clear technical superiority over PS2, it might have been the reason why Xbox has been more hardcore gamers console and better software/hardware ratio than PS2, but I don't think that trend will continue with Xbox360,thus I think Xbox360 and PS3 will have similar software sales#/hardware ratio.
