Interesting items of note:

PS2 - 443,334
Xbox - 164,329
PSone - 81,616
Gamecube - 78,907

I have a hard time believing that PS1 outsold Gamecube. PS1 software is selling worse then GCs, and that's despite the fact that PS1s outnumber GCs 10 to 1.

It's this little thing we call piracy, almost everyone with a PSone does it,
it's a shame.

One of the interesting things:

Dreamcast 9/9/99 through 1/31/01 - 3.8 million
Gamecube 11/18/01 through 1/31/03 - 3.7 million

Gamecube has not passed the Dreamcast sales mark yet.

Also, another thing:

Shenmue on Dreamcast - 459,000
Shenmue II on Xbox - 88,000

Looks like not too many Sega fans have Xbox units. This would explain the poor sales of JSRF and slow start for PDO as well.

Most Sega fans have probably migrated to GCN.

Guys you have to visit the GA forums every now and then. This info was released 3 weeks ago.

And yes I'd say most Sega fans are on the Cube. Look at SoA with almost 20,000 units with only two days of release. Not bad at all for Sega. Look at the Sonic Mega Collection at nearly 200,000 units sold. Something tells me that kind of number would'nt be that high on XB or PS2 for that matter.

Johhny the big difference in those numbers are the ones of Japan for both DC and GCN. Also the actual software sold on each platforms. Sega just couldn't move any software on DC. When the GCN has a attach rate nearly what XB is with 34 less games released than XB. And that will surely go up with Zelda coming.

Also I think NOA should have been doing the "free game " bundle deal before Christmas. This was a mistake. It would have moved ALOT of systems. I'm not gonna say as much as XB but ALOt more than they would have. Feburary has been a very good month for Cube. It'll probably be over 200,000 units for Feb. Mainly because of the bundle deal and Zelda. A district manager at Best Buy posted at the GA forums that the GCN moved as many systems as XB did in Feb. And one of thier big districts it sold more than XB. He could'nt beleive it. He also said Metroid and RE0 have done well as a result of the bundle.

But overall it's good Nintendo has finally woke up to smell the Xbox' fumes. BUt they should have made the bundle move back in Nov.

I saw the thread at GA about EB sales, and that was only one district out of three, and i don't recall it saying it was the biggest.

Actually, the tie-in ratio on Dreamcast was over 4:1 in the US and close to 7:1 in Japan. Also, Sega was doing better in Europe at this time, and only about 700k worse in Japan.

Makes you wonder why Sega folded with the Dreamcast. They said they can't recoup the cost of making a Dreamcast. I wonder if Dreamcast is actually more expensive to make compare to PS2 or even GC for its time.

Sega games seems to dwindle in sales compare to when games are on Dreamcast.

But the SegaGT and JSRF bundle did a nice number, maybe Sega should do more bundle. Sonic and GC bundle maybe ?

PS2 Max Payne sold more than 1.1 million in US alone....      , more than Splinter Cell (X-BoX)....hey! Rockstar make Max Payne 2 a PS2 exclusive and see your bank balance increase by leaps and bounds....LOL!

Why would they do that? From December NPD:

337 XBX MAX PAYNE Dec-01 TAKE 2 INTERACTIVE 21,348 505,524

Pass up on half of their sales? :p

When Sega dropped the DC, in Europe, they were somewhere around 1.5M (pretty much less), a number already reached by both xbox and GC now.

I think the DC did pretty well, less than what Sega expected (at DC lauch they claimed 15M by March 2k1, theu were only around 6M), but Sega had lost money for 5 years, was the biggest losing money of all Japan over all economic categories in 2k, was almost put in bankurpt in July 2k, because they had a lot to difficulties to pay the interest rates of the money they had to get for the DC launch and after.

Add the prospect of a price war and stagnant sales before the drastic price cut, the lack of funds, publishers already leaving the boat, the end was not a surprise.

I've got 3.47 mu for DC sold in that same time frame not 3.8. But yeah Wazoo Sega was bleeding money way before the DC. I just read the article where they've laid off 20% of thier US wrkforce too. Man Sega cant catch a break.

You have to add the Sonic and Sega Sports bundles to your numbers.

Dreamcast was at 9 million when it got cancelled and roughly 2 million of those were in Europe.

It's true guys. The DC was doing better than Cube at this point in it's lifecycle everywhere but in Japan.

The upside is that Nintendo has the cash to ride it out.

Shenmue on Dreamcast - 459,000
Shenmue II on Xbox - 88,000
Not only do I remember so many people being completely disappointed with Shenmue (never a good thing if you plan a sequel), but it's Sequel was probably the most imported game ever. I think Shenmue 2 would do bad no matter what console it got released on.

marconelly!:
Not only do I remember so many people being completely disappointed with Shenmue (never a good thing if you plan a sequel),
Far more people were disappointed with Final Fantasy 7, yet planning sequels for that was never a problem. Entire portions of the used game sections in some stores were actually loaded with returned copies of FF7.
but it's Sequel was probably the most imported game ever. I think Shenmue 2 would do bad no matter what console it got released on.
The turn, menu-based combat of Final Fantasy was a shock to many people who bought the game (and a PSX specifically for it in some cases) after having been enticed by its deceptive commercial done completely in the game's FMV cut-scenes. But, as the Final Fantasy series has shown, it's all about clever marketing, marketing, and more marketing - something the Shenmue series never had much of. With the right ad campaign, both Shenmue I and II could've sold much better.

I agree with you on FFVII. I had no idea how good it did, how much it was returned (I had no clue what was going on with consoles back then) but I know that when I got to play the game at my friend's home, it was *completely* different than what I was expecting. I couldn't stand that kind of gameplay, but my friend loved it :\

To this day I wish Square would at least *try* to make a different kind of game with the same dedication and budget they devote to FF and other their turn based RPGs. Then again, their venture to other kinds of entertainment, be it games or movies, has always flopped.
