Slow period of the year has officially started. Even the Wii in "only" 340k. Looks like the DSi was a hit. Nintendo can't seem to do much wrong this generation.

PS3 down 60k from last year. 360 down 13k. Wii down 374,000.

Compared to last years sales.

US Hardware Sales for April 2008:

Nintendo Wii – 714,200
Nintendo DS - 414,800
PlayStation Portable - 192,700
Xbox 360 – 188,000
PS3 – 187,100
PS2 – 124,400

hm... so year on year, the 360 is doing "ok". PS2 surge is probably due to the price drop ? DS is... DSi. Enough said. The rest plunged (YOY).

April 09/08

PlayStation 2 172K/124,400 -higher due to first full month at $99
PlayStation 3 127K/187,100 -economy
PSP 116K/192,700 -economy
Xbox 360 175K/188,000 -held sales well because of price drop
Wii 340K/714,200 -economy
Nintendo DS 1.04M/414,800 -higher because of DSi

Every system neatly explained (and hey, it actually makes sense this month)

That said, Wii has the most to worry about. Dropping from a supply constrained 714k to a non-supply constrained 340k.

It'd be nice if NPD distinguished between DSi and DSLite, just so we know the numbers.

Nintendo DS Product Line Sells More Than 1.04 Million, Sets Industry Record for April Hardware Sales

Powered by the launch of the new Nintendo DSi™ hand-held system, the Nintendo DS franchise set a new all-time U.S. record for April hardware sales for any video game platform, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. Nintendo sold more than 827,000 Nintendo DSi systems in April and an additional 215,000 Nintendo DS™ Lite systems, for a combined total of more than 1.04 million. This brings life-to-date sales of the Nintendo DS franchise in the United States alone to more than 30 million.
At the same time, Nintendo’s Wii™ console remained the No. 1 home system in the United States, selling more than 340,000 in April, more than the other current-generation home console systems combined. Wii has sold through nearly 20 million in the United States since its launch in November 2006.

“Nintendo systems and software represented 56 percent of the industry total shares in April, indicating continued strong consumer preference for quality and value,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Looking ahead, we are excited to introduce active-play games like Punch-Out!! and Wii Sports Resort into the market.”

Six games published by Nintendo finished in the top 10 best-sellers of April, including the top four games of the month. These include Wii Fit™ at No. 1 with more than 470,000 sold, Pokémon™ Platinum Version at No. 2 with more than 432,000 sold, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 3 with more than 209,000 sold, Wii Play™ at No. 4 with nearly 170,000 sold, New Super Mario Bros.™ at No. 7 with nearly 119,000 sold and Mario Kart™ DS at No. 8 with more than 112,000 sold.

It's worse nothing but including all platforms Sony and Ms have sold 590.000 units, in the mean time Nintendo sold 1.344.000 units... speaks for itself.

On the software front Nintendo moved 1.515.000 games, sony and Ms 478.000 (based on top 10).
The economy slows only to make Nintendo domination more obvious?
This month must let quiet some editors thinking.

I don't think it's a fair comparison using vendor totals.
This ignores the major launch of a new console edition (the DSi) and hides the 53% YoY drop for the Wii.

Price drop ?..

I think it has more to do with GTA and other factors vs the price drop. This is the first YOY loss it has had this year and I think the Wii's second(still outsold both systems combined.) The PS3 has now went 6 months straight with a loss for YOY.

Edit:

Actually I will add April taxes due or spent as part of the big reason why on the decline.

Not too surprising, recession coupled with nothing really exiting being released in April. About where I would have expected things. X360 and PS3 maybe a little better than I expected for the month.
