TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese video game maker Nintendo Co. is eyeing a record group recurring profit of 260 billion yen ($2.2 billion) for the year ended March 31 on strong sales of its handheld DS consoles and a weaker yen, the Nikkei business daily said on Friday.

The figure, above a market estimate for a 242.4 billion yen profit by 17 analysts polled by Reuters, would represent a 62 percent rise year-on-year and would exceed Nintendo's previous forecast by 24 percent.

I genuinely think we're looking at the spooky prospect of Wii actually wiining:)cool:) this round of consoles ("victory" defined as greatest # of units sold). And if lacklustre PS3 sales continue sony's going to get soundly beaten by MS.

I truly did nt expect that could be possible.
Nintendo had gotten so good at screwing up their stationary consoles over the last couple generations.

Man how things change don't they.
Peace.

A small correction to the above. I know some have tried to spin the Wii cost but it is pretty clear to me based on what is in the box (and constrated with the GCN) that Nintendo is making out nicely on Wii hardware. $2.2B, while strongly driven by the NDS, is indicative that they are not getting bitten by hardware costs.

I'll check your nicely and raise you with very nicely.

Well, I triple trump double dog check no paybacks your "very nicely" with "very, very nicely". :devilish: Interestingly, $2.2B is huge. It puts into perspective the potential windfall a company can have by market dominance and growth which puts into perspective losses we have seen at times from all the companies. e.g. Sony's recent losses could be sizably offset by such (and to point, past PS sales do that and much more); two years of such revenue could almost put the entire Xbox division in the black for its lifetime.

When did Nintendo actually post a yearly loss? I think they've always been profitable for the foreseeable past.

Sony I don't know. I think the gaming division posted some loss before PS3 launch due to all the inventory sitting there unsold. Hasn't MS's gaming division almost always been completely unprofitable with exception to when the Halos launched or somesuch?

Maybe they are making profits now I haven't seen any thread about it for a long time. If not considering brisk 360 sales they can't be doing thinhgs right..
Peace.

Were Sony's games division ever actually this profitable even at there height with PS2? Serious question, I'd be interested to see the yearly profits/losses for Sony and Nintendo since Sony entered the gaming market with PS1.

Wasnt that about 2 years ago when alot of money went into DS and Wii but little came into nintendo because the Cube was basically dead? I believe that was actually the only time ever nintendo made a loss.

Hmm... Mr Bigglesworth is getting upset.

That's true however it might be difficult for these two heavy infrastructure companies to achieve those numbers in their console business with their cost structure and all. I think Sony is going to lose some of it's marketshare and MS will gain some, but not enough to make a killing. I have some pet peeves with the Wii hardware, but I have to give utmost rispect to them on their ability to turn somewhat low risk and low cost strategy to such a gold mine. It looks so easy... but it ain't.
