It is my belief that the scientist who does the groundwork wrt. to understanding how nature works is a bit more important than the innovator who applies the work done by the scientist. I think there are less of the scientist type and more of the innovator type and that it is easier to lose one innovator than one scientist.

I dunno if that makes sense ...
 
No, I think many people eschew the scientist and uphold the innovator. After all, it is the innovator who brings them their microwave ovens and laser pointers. However, without the groundwork laid by a scientist, the innovator would have nothing to work with in the first place. That said, both are important but I profess I would bias the relationship toward the scientist.
