Apparently its going to launch "soon", in brazil followed by russia and china.

A norwegian newspaper today claimed the price to be 200usd but that seems way way way to high, you might aswell just buy a X360 then, which is more powerful and has games.

Unless the thing is supposed to cost $50-100 i predict a flop.

Interesting, but not impressive. Seems more like some kind of media machine with all the installed RAM. According the Wiki, it's supposed to have stuff like Need For Speed: Carbon, and FIFA 09 (according to commitments from EA), but how are they going to manage ports (if they are that) with only 4 million triangles max geometry set up?! That's not even PSP level of geometry.........I sincerely hope that "4 million" was a typo. I must admit though, that there is serious potential in a console that sells cheaper than our normal contemporaries in the respective countries the Zeebo is aiming at where $200 USD is pretty cheap compared to the much higher inflated prices in foreign shores outside of America, Japan, and the EU. I'll tell you what, everyone in the Latin World is a potential customer if FIFA 09 comes on the Zeebo for free.

No, just port all the crappy cell phone games. There's potentially a big market for a simple Peggle box. A one-off version of FIFA 09 would be an investment to raise interest, but I expect most games will be ported flash games or from the Doom/SimCity era. Is $199 cheap enough to make it in these markets, though? We'll see.

Why would anyone in a third world country buy this over a PS2?

Possibly because PS2s are more than 200USD? In Brazil the price of a 'legit' (not grey or black-market) PS2 is 220-300USD. (Of course, the PS2 is hackable and there's Winning Eleven for it.)

Brazil has capital mobility so i dont get how those prices are set, shipping something like a X360\ps3 cannot cost all that much from the states. I dont get why a PS2 would cost 220-300usd.

In most of Eastern European countries modded PS2 is around $160 and it's probably the most selling console around here.
Wii is largely ignored, most people have no clue what an Xbox is and people don't buy PS3 a lot because you need to pay for games.
This is Eastern Europe/Balkans though, not sure how things are in South America though.

consoles are more expensive here, a non "grey market" console is really expensive like
http://www.submarino.com.br/produto/12/21426978/xbox360+60gb+++pgr4+++too+human+++cabo+hdmi
xbox 360 = R$ 2.399,00 = +- 1000 USD (but you can buy a "grey market" for +- 500 USD)
http://www.submarino.com.br/produto/12/1854159/playstation+2+prata+com+1+controle
ps2 = R$ 639,00 almost 300 USD (you can buy for +- 190 USD in grey market, with a modchip to run pirate games)
the thing is a PS2 have a lot of good games, better graphics and can run pirate games that you buy for 3 USD... thats why I think zeebo will have a big challenge ahead, and it should cost a lot less... but this company (tectoy) that will sell the zeebo still selling "mega drives" for like 100 usd or more... so...

Here in Brazil...

1 US$ = 2,3 Real
Official importers
Microsoft X360 = PRO = R$ 2.299,00 (US$ 1000) =~ R$ 1.100,00 (US$ 480,00 black market)
Nintendo Wii = R$ 1.999,00 (US$ 870) = ~R$ 1.100,00 (US$ 480,00 black market)

Halo Wars/Gears of War 2 'Official' = R$ 179,00 (~US$ 78,00)

No official for PS2/PS3
PS3 ('mega' stores ) = R$ 1.800,00 (US$ 780) =~R$ 1.300,00 (US$ 570,00 black market)
PS2 ('mega' stores ) = R$ 600,00 (US$ 260) NO MOD =~ R$ 370,00 MODDED (US$ 160,00, black market)

Sony wiil be launch PS2 in Brazil next year...

R$ 599 > Zeebo > R$ 450 ...
3G downloads... max size per game = 50MB
just 1 GB flash memory

bye

PS: sorry for my basic english :p

Because that's dirt cheap!

Brazil for instance:

Xbox 360 Elite $739.90
Xbox 360 Arcade $599.99

PS3 $649.99

Source

So you can see why ~$200 is a sweet spot.

Beaten to it!

I might add that this is becouse of sky high taxes that you have to pay if you want to sell your product in Brazil. You may, instead of paying the taxes, contract people for qualified work in Brazil for about the same amount of money.

So this in Europe/US would cost more or less what?

Around 50-75$?

It still seems a bit expensive for the HW, a 6200 with 256MB is about 20$ and a sempron is more or less the same even with the Flash and the DVD rom it seems they could have managed better.

Anyone thinks the same?

We did, south america (and possibly some other areas) just missed the stick completely

Well currently the console pricing in Europe is pretty good for us. For Example the X360 Elite is 299€ vs 399$+sales tax. 299e*1,35=403$. In UK things are very cheap right now.

I live in a third world country [India] & PS2 is already obsolete here and people have already moved on towards Xbox360/PS3.
Tbh I dont think Zeebo will sell here [ie. if it gets launched here] cause anyone who can buy a Zeboo can already buy a PS2 [it costs 150$ here] or a PSP.
