New console! Zeebo! Targeted for third world countries

You know we are comparing the launch price of the Zeebo against price of a 10 year old console. I surmise that if the Zeebo has any level of success and/or can drive down the price over time then in a year from now the price gap should be much greater. Given its cheap components, if it is able to achieve some level of volume, it should much cheaper than the ps2 to produce.

Its not like Sony is going to put forth a concerted effort to drive down the cost of the ps2 at the same rate it did when Sony was driving the PS2 toward market domination. If the Zeebo is driven to a price point so thats its affordable to the mass majority it might find success.

Considering the availability of other consoles with more value at cheaper prices, this doesnt sound like an attractive choice for consumers in third world countries. Not even the richest people there will have enough incentive to buy Zeebo at that price to increase demand and drive costs further down.

A quick update. In time for Chrismas and "Día de Reyes", the console dropped to $1,999 MXN and now is in price parity with the Ps2 (official). Now I think it has a better chance of success.

As a gaming machine is inferior to the Ps2, but it can access the internet out of the box by G3. It has internal memory and USB ports. The pieces are there to make it something especial.

Now it needs execution, Which sadly, is very lacking atm. This thing should have access to Google Docs, Wikipedia and a printer but the Cellphones companies here are greedy (specially telcel) and are keeping the connection rates of the Zeebo on par with the smarthphones/Netbooks of the rich people. Some of the highest in the world were cellphones has mass market penetration...

$60 USD for 2mps with a 3GB cap last time i checked....
