Need some advice regarding MS support

My 360 died last night, 3 red lights. I purchased it 8 months ago and it has been in the same spot in my living room since I got it. It is sitting horizontally, there is about a foot of open space in the back, a foot of open space to the right and about 2 feet of open space to the left. It is not lying on a carpet or rug. I do not use it heavily, maybe 6-8 hours a week ( I wish I had the time). The manufacture date is Januray 17, 2006. I called MS support and they said I had to pay to have it repaired. I thought that it should be fixed free of charge. I don't think I'm being unreasonable in asking for that. In my eyes its obvious that my unit is defective. What do you guys think I should do? I don't want this to become a MS bashing thread, because I for one love the console and have enjoyed the console for the 8 months that it has been working.

I'd bitch and complain until they replaced it. Or call them and buy an extended warrenty and then wait for the warrenty to go through and say it died then ;)

call several times a day for 7 days getting a new rep each time and maybe you'll get the one that allows it.

Otherwise... just pay for it.

this is why I pay for the warrantry from my retailer for any new electronic technology.

I guess the thought of paying 120 - 130 dollars to get it repaired really bothers me. In the last generation I had a console for over 3 years before it broke down and they replaced it for free. All I had to do was pay for the shipping.

If its only 8 months old does'nt the 12 MONTH warranty that Microsoft provide for the uint being defect free cover the fault?

Stupid question here, but have you tried removing the hard drive, unplugging the unit from the power supply and A/V connection, then reconnecting the powersupply and rebooting without the HDD?

Basically try this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907534

And a lot of times it's not the unit, but the powersupply that is the culprit for 3 red lights.

I think the 12 month warranty is something you have to purchase. They will only cover units made before Jan. 1, 2006 and mine was Jan. 17. It seems to me that this Jan. 1 date is just some arbitrary date that they are using.

I tried unplugging all cables and power cord. Removing the hard drive did not fix the issue. The support person also asked me to check the power brick and the light was green when turned on. She basically said that I needed to bring it in for repairs.
