Myspace prank results in the suicide of 14 year old

There are technical solutions to keeping your children off unwanted sites.

Yes, such as not having internet access at home, and never letting them out of the house, cus you know, it's not like their friends or school have computers with internet access or anything. Oh, wait...

They could have controlled it at home.

They could have controlled it at home.

Yeah but would they have know how to implement that solution? Not everyone is as tech saavy as the people in here and they certainly can't be held accountable for that.

I can probably think of a scenario where literally any professions knowledge would would help to protect a child in a particular scenario that the average person wouldn't be aware of.

I agree..

How about thinking out of the box? How about taking the power cord off the computer for starters? Or how about hiding the keyboard? Or do you have to be techie to implement these situations? No, you have to have a level of common sense, which it seems. For alot of people nowadays, this is glaringly missing!

I totally blame this on the parents, if they really didnt want their child to use the computer, they *could* have done this. But instead they didnt. Perphaps if they had been more "parental" about this, she would have still been alive. This whole story smacks to me of complete apathy towards the situation of their child.

I see. So I expect you will escort your children 100% of the time until they are 18, yes? Otherwise I could accuse you of being negligent exposing them to the dangers of the road? Or the dangers of pedo's picking them up on the street? Or hell, the dangers of your trusted neighbours mentally abusing them to the point of suicide without your knowledge? I also fully expect you to monitor your childs phone and internet use 100% of the time. Yes?

You want to know who I blame for this? I blame the people who would blame this on the parents rather than the sicko's who take amusement in mentally torturing a child. Hell, if the general public would rather blame a childs parents than the sick f*cks that drove that child to suicide then why don't we all take advantage of this little loophole. Lets mentally torture to death anyone we don't like and then blame it on their parents...

America (and the UK is v.close behind) lives in a blame culture. It doesn't matter one bit who's fault it is, all people care about it blaming the easiest target because thats what will give them the "quick fix" of moral superiority.

"Its easier to blame the parents so it must be their fault"

I find it amazing that you actually believe you couldn't end up in that situation. Because believe me, it wouldn't take a genius to get your child into a similar situation regardless of how clever you think you are at protecting them. Yes you know how PC's work. Great! There are many, many other ways a determinned person can get to them. Believe it or not, bullying didn't begin at the same time as the internet.

It's the music. Lets blame the music!

Let's blame everything and everyone except for the person who took their own life and the people who's job it is to raise and protect them.

Personally, I place blame on everyone involved in that situation, the girl, the girl's parents, the other girl, the other girl's parents, the neighbors, the school, and the girl's physicians. I'm sure there's others I've left off that list.

An adult was exploiting a 14 years old girl to her advantage.

Even if the girl didn't kill herself, there would still be an injustice there.

I don't get people who blame the girl or her parents. If you're attacked, you shouldn't be blamed because you couldn't defend yourself.

What is a parent's job? Is it to protect and raise their children? Did they do that in this case?

What is a child's job? Is it to listen and respect their parents? Did she do that in this case?

Yup, forget about the adults who bullied a 14yo girl to the point of suicide and then displayed virtually no regret.

Lets blame it on the parents and the child herself.

Priceless.

No. I did not forget them. If you reread my original post, you will see who I blame. I'm amazed at how anyone can not include the child and her parents in the long list of who's responsible. That is what's amazing and priceless.

Anyone who is so susceptible and mentally and emotionally insecure to be pushed to that edge should have received help earlier. The failure happened long before the final act.
