MS improves X360 customer service

Excelent move by M$.

Even that's a clear improvement from previous terms, still nothing but the expected from any consumer buying a cutting edge and expensive piece of eletronics.

I got a unit on lauch day that showed problems with the DVD drive motor by 10/2006.

M$ sent UPS to get it 4 days after 1st call, paid for shipping to them and sent me another one received exact 18 days after 1st call, shipping also paid by M$.

So, I have nothing to complain about M$ customer service but the ubber confuse call Center in India that struggles to understand you and you to understand them.

About time, but I do think that 2 years should really be the length considering it's a $400 machine.

This will be great news for a friend of mine, his broke and I think he might still be just under a year. I had him use the towel trick, and his 360 has been working fine for the last week

Every 360 should come with a free towel repair kit

Scooby, tell you friend to send the 360 immediatelly to M$.

The towel method is only a temporary fix and the 360 will 100% go down again in the next 2 to 10 weeks.

If you wanna understand why do the towel method works and why it's NEVER a definitive fix look at xbox-scene.com forums about 360 hardware and you'll find out without too much searching.

;)

What is the towel trick?

Wouldn't this just burn the unit up and cause failure?

It works like a charm. His system was d.e.a.d, would run for 30seconds tops before freezing and giving the ring of death.

Since the towel trick it hasn't frozen, he even left it on overnight and it was stillrunning in the morning. Not bad! I know it's not a permanent fix, pretty handy in a jam though.

cool - thanks for the tips guys. I'll remember to tell my buddy if his acts up (he didn't buy the extended Warranty  )

Amazing how 'some' threads get a one star rating in no time.

It would be funny if you could track the voting... I suspect a sudden change in behaviour would occur if that was possible.

Anyway, is this only for USA / Canada?

 I'm not sure I'd have left a hot piece of CE gear (what, about the equivalent of a 100+W incandescent?) wrapped in a towel overnight. Not without good insurance and little of value nearby.

Good thing he doesn't live in the forest, or Smokey would've been on his ass like a cigarette butt in dry brush!

Not in the towel overnight!! Just left it running overnight to see if it would freeze. I only told him to do the towel for 12-15minutes tops, I'm not sure how long he ended up doing it for.

Ah, the towel trick. So hilarious. I used a heat gun on mine, but it still wasn't a permanent fix. I still can't believe quality control was so bad that they didn't discover this manufacturing problem prior to launch. I've known so many people with three-ringed 360s, it seems if they were doing burn-in / cool down tests off the production line, some of them would have invariably failed. Maybe they did catch alot of failed units during burn-in, but thought they were simply pulling bad units and that units that passed the burn-in were good. Perhaps they didn't consider that their burn-in test would have a high percentage of false negatives.

Wouldn't such a situation rather require bad insurance, or, at the very least a bad claims agent? A good one would probably take a look at the fire report, conclude that wrapping electrical appliances in towels constitute negligence, and send you on your way with 'declined' stamped on your forehead. :?:
