More bad news for PS3 launch?

evidently I did not make myself clear.

I meant that the estimate sounds high.

It sounds high but in reality, its much lower than electronics you use in everyday life take. Its also alot less what usual PC uses. This is exactly why I ain't too worried about the usage of power by PS3. :)

Not that I care much how much power my electronics take anyway. :D

What is there to worry about ?

From all hands-on accounts, PS3 runs cool, quiet and stable throughout the days. Apparently, after the delay, Cell also became more robust for general purpose programming. If I understand things correctly, whether PS3 runs at 380W max on paper (or Xbox 360 at 500+W) is just dubious math.

80K number is for launch _day_. Stay on the bright side and enjoy the games. I'm not sure tracking releases day by day is that interesting. Looking forward to walk-through guides in Resistance:Fall of Man and Gears of War.

Isn't this the peak that was sighted on the sheet that was submitted to some official US electronics body or other?

It's not like IGN did any measuring yet in this FAQ.
That IGN page was already posted by Gradthrawn as the third post in this thread, and it's sourced from the official FAQ at SCEI.

Its maximum power consumption is 384W on paper as Bobbler writes, and by the same math the power consumption of Xbox 360 rates as high as 500-600W.

Well I know there are people who are thinking of importing the machine to Europe despite Sonys efforts to stop them. People either has to replace the powersupply or get a power converter and in this latter case the power converter has to be up to the task. Where I live I have seen basically two converters come in to play, the one is 350W and the other is 630W, needless to say that the 630 costs a fortune. And if Sony says that the max is 380, then 350W sounds a bit low.

Playing on your PS3 for an average of 4 hours a day wcould add approx $80 to your yearly electricity bill in comparison to the 360. The PS3 consumes around 380 watts of power more than double that of the 360, which uses 160 watts and 8 times more than the PS2s 45 watts. Today Tony Blair proposed a programme of crippling taxes to fight global warming. Lets hope he doesnt get any crazy ideas for a PS3 energy tax.

The ~160 watt 360 figure comes from actual real-world testing, not the rating associated with the power supply. Obviously real-world PS3 power consumption is not going to come in at double 360's, so Maxconsole's jumping the gun.

Well I didn't say that they should just be multiplied, I did however though that it could be used as a loose guideline, to figure out powerdraw, obviously I was mistaken.

Ok let me see if I can remeber from High School Physics, (this is from '85 so I will probably be wrong)

P=IxR

That is Power in watts (P) = Current in amps (I) times Resistance in Ohms (R)

So we aleady know the current of 3.2a but we need to get that Voltage into something we can plug into the equation.

So let's cheat & use this Ohm's Law calculator which is about 38 W

the concern is that Sony are supposed to have sorted out their production difficulties, and instead we're getting a downscale of release units. Doesn't that suggest post-launch, PS3's will remain impossibly hard to come by?

So ? The purchaser has to make a decision then. People who import/ebay for a PS3 at this stage already know they will have to pay a premium regardless.

It does not mean that the OP is accurate w.r.t. PS3's 380W usage (or Xbox 360's 500+W usage) during daily use. It also does not mean PS3 runs hot :|

Possible, but meeting numbers for a particular day is harder than meeting numbers within a few weeks/months. Supply chain is also event-driven (chunky) rather than continuous (smooth).

These things will be sorted out just like any consoles before PS3. It's also possible for Wii and Xbox 360 to pull ahead of PS3, but no one knows for sure until perhaps early next year.

:p yes.

that was the point of my post about the 360 performance.

If it did though, wouldn't it make for a GREAT bullet-point at E3 2007??

Twice the power drawn must equal twice the power used! I can picture the crude Excel bar graphs now... :p
