Metroid Prime 3 at Gamestop

Like the subject says, MP3 is on preorder at Gamestop. $60. I guess prices of next-gen games going up is not exclusive to Sony and MS. The release date they state is 3/1/2006. WTH?

My prediction: Gamestop is going to be having some very strange numbers on their financials if all this pre-order stuff translates down to every game, every console, a year in advance. I wonder what's going on over there - at some point it starts getting ridiculous.

BUT... Metroid Prime 3 - awesome! 8)

That doesn't sound right. If it's really MP3 releasing that soon then it's for GCN. Nintendo has already said REV will release in the fall.

Though I do remember reading an article that said that Rev would release in the spring, in Japan. The fall might be for the US.

It may have been a bs article (it was one of hundreds I read during the E3 masturbatory period), but it might make sense if that were the case with MP3. Gamestop may have misinterpreted the release date as a US release date. Or maybe it's an import date. I dunno.

Well Gamestop wouldn't really know exactly when it's launching anyway - this just seems to be the pre-order trend nowadays - an arbitrary date is chosen, you put money down, and they'll update you as dates firm up. Whenever it does end up launching, you're confident in knowing that you're one of those that will receive it first.

For Gamestop though, it allows them to inflate their current quarter/year sales numbers via games that aren't even in existence yet. The industry tends to take small dips when the generations switch, and maybe this is Gamestop's way of smoothing out the transition financially.

Nope, it says "Platform: Revolution". Which brings up another interesting question: is "Revolution" the real name?

No I think that information is wrong. The article I read said Nintendo wants to follow the DS launch plan which is NA first then Japan then Europe.

No one knows, but the same logic applies here as in my post above - they can sell it under the 'Revolution' console and just change it to the new name if and when Nintendo changes it.

I really like N5 myself - it just sounds cool - but I guess it'll seem a little crowded in the number field were all three consoles to sport numbers.

I don't think they charge you until the game ships though, so they wouldn't be helped by it at all.

That's not even true - as long as they get that $5 from you, they can put you down for the whole of the projected game cost amount in terms of revenues; they then also put a liability down because they owe you the game and the remainder of what you owe them goes into another receivables account of some sort, depending on how they structure it. It all works out, but the all important 'revenue' number gets to go up when they report earnings for the quarter.

I really can't emphasize enough how helpful a successful pre-order campaign is in not only raising revenues for the current period, but also in getting accurate predictors on the retailers end on how many to order and stock initially and on the manufacturers end on how many to make for the initial run.

But to be doing it for a game that basically hasn't even been announced yet... I don't know, Gamestop's pushing the limits of the reasonable here.

They ask for $5 down.

Not if you preorder online, but I guess online preorders are lucky to make up even 10% of total preorders.

Nintendo did show footage of it at e3 though, and called it metroid prime 3. So we at least know there is a sequel, rather than calling it something like "Metroid Next".

Oh ok gotcha. :)

I was on a vacation during E3 so missed out on it all, and haven't caught up yet to the exten I should have. Did it look good?

Well, it was just FMV, so no gameplay shown at all.

Apparently there was a blurb in EGM that Prime 3 is indeed under way for the Gamecube. You can take that for what its worth.

Even if we disregard the information I posted which confirms a NA REV launch next fall followed by Japan and Europe, it makes sense that MP3 could be planned for GCN next year. Since REV is backwards compatible with GCN, Nintendo might even throw in a few REV specific surprise features in the form of a second game disc designed for REV. This second disc wiould be the same game, but would instead contain higher polygon models, higher resolution textures, widescreen output etc. when played on a REV. 8)

That would be a cool marketing move. ;)
