mcv - PS3 concerns ignite Xbox 2 support

Could a lack of PS3 info for the general development community result in more Xbox 2 support?

A few interesting quotes. i'm curious who these developers are (outside of tecmo)

“There is a lot of uncertainty amongst Japanese companies that Sony is unsure of what direction to take with PS3,â€￾ said a senior figure at a major Japanese developer and publisher. “Everyone’s business model has traditionally been built around Sony hardware, but given the lack of info, people are nervous about putting all of their eggs in one basket.â€￾

“If we ask Sony technical questions, we don’t hear back for four-to-six weeks; Microsoft answers (Xbox 2) queries there and then.â€￾

““The vibe between most of the major parties was: ‘Is PlayStation such a safe bet? Maybe we should take Xbox 2 more seriously’

““With Microsoft there’s a clearer indication of what’s going on – Sony is being sketchy about a lot of things. We’re now planning joint releases on PS3 and Xbox 2 for next-gen, where we have always lead on PlayStation hardware in the past.â€￾

I voted yes, first of all cause i'm bored and second of all because i do think that MS will surely be in the limelight until Sony open their big mouths. It's logical.
People like to know stuff, if MS are keeping them happy with info and Sony aren't, they'll want to hear what MS has to say, especially when it comes down to specs for next gen hardware.

It's sort of tradition the one in the lead will fvck up sooner or later. I dunno if Sony is ACTUALLY fvcking up at the moment (there would be much to gain for some by spreading bogus FUD about it), but if they are, it would be sooner than I thought. Oh well, they've been kings of the hill pretty much for ten years now, maybe that's enough time to fill them with hubris, who can say.

I guess we'll know for sure if they launch PS3 and it is also a digital video recorder and costs $700. Then the universe will promptly crash and burn from Deadmeat finally being proven right on something... :p

Oh I see, those quotes (I see, not all of them) are from Tecmo, practically a Microsoft 2nd party ;)
That should have been mentioned in the thread title, to acoid misinterpretations.

only 13 votes? i thought this topic might inspire more than that. ;)

...and oddworld is the old oddworld. The quotes weren't just from tecmo.

Well, Japanese developer support doesn't mean much anymore:

Other than Nintendo, Japanese developers are barely relevant in the US market anymore. The only third party Japanese developers left that matter to a console's success are Square and Konami and MS will probably never have them in their camp. Ubi Soft and Bioware support is a good enough substitute though.

Xbox got the SH games and a MGS game so I expected the same for Xenon. Also Square will probably support Xenon if the installed based is there.

Voted yes too. I mean, about 3 months ago(or more) our resident devs commented 'we already knew quite a bit about the PS2 around this similar time period, before PS2 launch'.

MrSingh did point out that some studios have received official information/specs, but in light of Tecmo president's recent complaints, obviously only the 'key/major' studios received it.

IMO, after all the secrecy, hyper-hype, delay(many studios still know nothing), 2-3 years of debates/discussions/flames on these boards, if the PS3 can't offer at least 2x performance over the competition, I shall label the thing a disappointment. <-

OK maybe a mild disappointment.

Sony has given more info on PS3 then MS has on the Xbox 2, Most of what we know on the X2 was leaked.

Actually the developers KNOW what to expect from Xenon. That's the whole point of this thread. There's nothing on PS3 except that it will have Blu-ray. All the talk about CELL and PS3 is just speculation based on some patents that aren't even necessarily connected to PS3. ;)

Actually, you don't know what Sony has disclosed to certain parties. Actually, you aren't in a position to comment, and, actually, you're talking to the wrong person with your useless egotistical invective based on the view from the outside.

Our talk on this board is mostly conjecture concerning PS3 due to Sony's control over information. Our discussion on X2 is more concrete because Microsoft and it's 3rd parties are leaking like a sieve. Do not confuse this "openess" with documented NDA disclosure. Knowing what we do about X2, publically, isn't exactly that helpful to a developer you know -- although, for some of us, it seems to be all the difference....

KK has leaked performance expectations, but it's just a bunch of PR BS. PS3 will be 1000 times as powerful as PS2....riiiiight. When it's toooo quiet, then there's probably something wrong ie performance isn't up to snuff with what's been known to Xenon developers. I mean if the cpu is capable of 1 TFLOPS then it wouldn't really matter what Xenon can do right so why keep it a secret when you can blow it (Xenon) away even before it launches since Xenon specs are already locked down?

The render just doesn't look right....

Well, in several months, you'll see which gains momentum, Sony's hype and Microsoft's FUD

But seriously, how's the response to Dreamcast before its release among dev community? Another question, how much does Xbox 2 development differ from Xbox 1 development anyway?

An other reason why Sony is'nt leaking as much to the public ... they need to focus on PSP news, that's the important machine for Sony till next E3.

Hey PC-Engine, lets try to get your facts right:

He really didn't leak them. He blatently stated it in an obscure interview (in Japanese) in 2001. An example of a "leak" is the Microsoft X2 hardware overview that's floating around the 'net. Another is the leak of the multi-tiered SKUs.

I mean, your logic is horrendous. Why keep it a secret? Hmm.. there is that whole PSP thing goin' on now. And what's going to happen if, lets just imaging for a moment, that Billy gets up at CES in January and unveils X2. Then, at a Sony event in March, Kutaragi and his friends from IBM and Toshiba unveil an entirely new computing architecture and topology?

Any one for a history lesson? 6.21.1998 and 3.xx.1999.
