man doesnt eat for 10 years

For those who were too lazy to read the article: the guy was under observation for 10 days, during which he did not eat or drink anything.
The doctors say urine was formed in his bladder but absorbed thorugh the bladder walls. He claims he's been living like that for decades.

Going without food for ten days is not that remarkable (hell, Lemmy from Mötorhead has been living off of whiskey and cigarettes since the mid 70s), going without water is.

He of course has some source of nourishment, but it is still clear that his metabolism is running very low.

Cheers

Errrmmmm no not really. It's actually the opposite. Going without water is possible, if one is eating something, because water can be processed out of the food itself. Going without food on the other hand, and only water, now that is remarkable and dangerous, because water cannot substitute in its own what we get from food, although the opposite is true.
Also, the fact that the urine was reabsorbed by the body (if it's true, which is hard to believe) tells us something about the amount of toxins in this man's body. Living like that for 10 years is pretty... umm... poisonous...
But maybe a doctor could explain this better...

Going without passing urine is easy. Hook a tube from your bladder to the back of your throat and all the urine will go back into you.

Thanks KILER. We needed that... :?

You have a better suggestion of how he lasted?

EDIT: Just read your post above.

You seem, I was close. His urine did end up back into his body. How does your bladder make urine poison after a while?

errmmm... urine (and feces) are waste product of the body. they are toxic by nature (otherwise we wouldnt expell them) and although they can be re-filtered to assimilate useful substances that were first to be expelled, in the end re-filtering urine over and over again would result (one might think) in kidney problems. Quite dangerous if you ask me...
This is all a bit gross, but basic anatomy explains this pretty well...

I can somewhat understand being able to reduce water and caloric demands in a thermally regulated hospital room.

The claim about surviving decades without food is something I would think the guy would say after going ten days without food.

I wonder why some people don't bother even reading the link. Do you prefer if I posted the entire article as a quote and not give the place that the article originates from any chance of advertising money or recognition for its work?

I really blame IE and the lack of multi-tabbed browsing for this.

Back on topic, I have heard these kind of claims before of going without food and water for long periods of time. If the gentleman would be kind enough to be under observation for a month in hospital that would answer some questions.

The guy made a claim he's been living like that for decades but the hospital has only observed him for 10 days.

Going w/o food is no big deal at all.

The water thing could be accomplished by being in a humid environment that was at the correct temperature to keep you from sweating (then you could absorb water through your lungs when breathing and what not)

I was mountain biking and ran out of water it was @ 6000 feet near Moab Utah and I can tell you that reabsorbing urine happens. :)

Strange story. I've read it in todays newspaper though they've made a mistake: 68 years instead of 10 hehe
