This was posted by Vince in another thread and I haven't found a central discussion on it anywhere in the forums.

Firstly if this needs to be moved mods, please do so.
Secondly this thread is not about how many FLOPS or MIPS or ALU's or PE's the PS3 will have. This thread and interview is not about the PS3 either. So if some of you members can please respect that and allow me to post my thoughts:

I get the overwhelming sensation that Kurtaragi-san has a desire, almost as if he is possessed, to create new life. I found some of what he says disturbing. He is seeing quite clearly a way ahead and has firmly set his vision on trying to make it feasible. He is not only interested in the technology but what it will mean for humans and what it will open up. He talks of a holy grail, to amass enough computing power to create a new world, for 5 billion people, yet to create a new world for one person he is talking about 1000 times the power CELL will bring.

But this interview isnt about CELL or even Sony - it is about a man and his struggle to make something new in this world. Kutaragi-san is about creation of a new existence - from an engineers point-of-view.

Kutaragi-san's vision is prodigal.

I agree, he is a man with a vision and an engineering and business knowledge to push Sony towards that vision and he has done an awesome job so far and Sony corporation finally had to admit the importance of his new Maverick and is pushing him higher in the ranks of Sony corp. itself.

What if he is an evil robot hellbent on a machine-ruled world? Has anyone thought about this? Anyone ever see him bleed? I haven't. Coincidence?! :?

(Just joking, of course. I do think he has an enthusiastic vision, though.)

Aha, he admits it!
To create a new world for one person you would need 256000-384000GFLOP, this is a widely known fact, and if 1000 CELLs would deliver 256000-384000GFLOP then we can easily see that 1 CELL would only be able to deliver a meager 256-384GFLOP while...

(sorry, just joking, couldn't help myself :))

If anything, he has proven that his team is able to sell game consoles. Thats right, plain jane game console. I shall see how they cope by going one up with a more ambitious setup.

I thought PlayStation 2 could also play DVDs and audio-CDs... bah...He proved that he and his team at SCE knows how to market such a great vision in the required steps making sure the customer is generally happy and feels the console has a good deal of added value to it.

DVD and CD playback(present in other consoles b4 PS2) are not really the big hoha about PS2. Yes, we have heard about some guy playing their DVDs on PS2, yet we also heard others readily going with standalone. So unless we have an official research on how many are actually utilising that function as much as

Yeay, its about added value, then again, DVD/CD playback are passe. Let see how they are going to sell the bigger step. Their so called all-in-one HT server Online Lifestyle dreamy dreams.

Will PS3 be bought as (expected) a game console or as a full set-top box? Will PSX even hit home for them?

Something like that. :p Hope you can get it. Engrish expressions me not too good and tired now.

Instead of giving 6 billion people 1000 CELLs each, maybe we should just give them enough food, that could create a new world as well.

taking Japan as a case study (becuase that's what these often are). the sales of DVD showed na increase in DVD sales during and after the PS2 launch.

taking a leap of faith to suggest that the additional value help spur growth of the DVD medium in Japan.

I think it was a very good thing that they had a DVD playback feature at launch with the PS2.

nowadays, you can buy a DVDplayer for 50 EURO

But then again, i dont want another device on top of my xbox and digital receiver just for dvdplayback.

*vomit..... puke..........*

DVD playback was on PS2 first. CD playback, yeah, since PS1. DVD, no.

still, that is not the point of the discussion is it now, Chap...

funny how some kid can STILL after all that's been said, criticise the way KK does business.

oh yeah i forgot, KK has no formal training... silly me how could i forget that...

While it is :
  • A. Easy to say this from where I'm comming from - stomach full
    B. Understandable from your point of view - for the good of humanity
I still need to say this.

Food is not the upper bound on our growth -intelligence on the other hand, is much closer.

notAfanB,
those were the real early days. launch hype + early adopters + games drought + novelity value gets you a spike. Any idea of whats happening recently? You see, i would like a wider coverage, bigger span and the latest of late data.

PS2 = game console. Tacking a DVD playback doesnt make it any less of a game console. Hell, you can have BR playback, online/offline gaming and even net surfing with PS3, and people dont see anything less than a primarily gaming device. No where near KK wireless connected all in one server hohohaha dreamy dreams.

guys guys, need i remind you that KK actually FELL FAIL FLAT onto his face with his dreamy dreams this time? Go read all his PS2 launch hype blah blah blah. ;)

Thus, you see, is it unfair for me to doubt Mr KK dreamy dreams, when he has yet prove anything, apart that his team can sell game consoles really well?

His Digital Home vision aint no biggy even so. Everyone is aiming for that. He is just lucky that due to the success of Playstation game consoles, it *might* be the trojan to Digital Homes. Then again, we have said that about several trojans of the past..

Go read his dreamy dreams during PS2 launch. Connected this universal that. Online this distribution that. Broadband lifestyle this Sonet that. Server this workstation that blah blah blah.

Me sure you sure about that infamous hohohaha crap spewed by Mr KK back then. ;)

In the end, PS2 = game console.

er and so we will these figues? okay we can do that if you like.

remember none is claiming that the PS2 launch is the sole propriety for the rapid adoption of DVD in japan (I don't know enough regarding the other territories). the spike if you like help sustain high degree of penetration for DVD and leapfrogged the first barrier for deployment of DVD in japan (ie getting the bugger into the home in some form).

you can think of it as war by attrition if you like. on a similar note by enforcing something like builtin ethernet capability and large starage capacity MS are adopting an approach which can only reap benefits for the consumer and service prodivers in the medium to long term.
