I suspect you'll get a lot of bell peppers rather than spicy meat.

Well, no, you order "salame picante" which is very much like pepperoni in the US, only it tends to be a bit spicier in my experience. Plain "salame" is different (usually salame ungherese...that seems to be the most popular).I've never really had what I considered a good pizza in Italy.
And pepperoni there is more like long skinny bananna pepper like things, not the pepperoni of the states.
If you want that, then you order 'salami', but unfortunately, that's pretty close to salami in the states, and well...yuck on pizza.
Of course, I was always touristing, and didn't ever stay too long, so it might just be I'm crappy at picking good food upon demand.
We had pizzas in Venice a few years back (in a trattoria recommended by "Lonely Planet") and for such a tourist packed city, were very pleasantly surprised.I ordered a pizza while in Rome in 1982 and got a flat piece of bread that looked like a ladle that'd been dipped in tomato sauce had lightly kissed its surface with a single green olive sitting in the middle. I hate olives.
Sounds like a marinara.I ordered a pizza while in Rome in 1982 and got a flat piece of bread that looked like a ladle that'd been dipped in tomato sauce had lightly kissed its surface with a single green olive sitting in the middle. I hate olives.

I've been pretty impressed by the variety of pizza toppings that they offer here. But one thing that I find strange: Hawaiian is not available anywhere.
That's cause pineapple on pizza is a crime by directive from the European Parliament.
well, it should be anyway
