Just bought a PS3, have a few easy questions

Found a 60gig version, which is what I wanted. Hooked it all up, was super easy. Set my language, time, scanned and found my wireless routers connection, and within about 5 mins, I was downloading the update. As I said, very easy.

1. Can you change the icon for the users? Ive made three, and would like different icons.
2. Can I download demos on my PC, and move them over on SD? Not a big deal really, but its going fairly slow. Cant wait to finally try Heavenly Sword! My laptop doesnt connect that well either, weak signal. So I dont think the PS3 is to blame.
3. What are the best options to have for display for DVD and such? Sort of confusing. I have a 2.5 year old Hitachi 57" HDTV, that supports 1080i, and HDMI. Ive got HDMI hooked up, and it asked me which res I wanted, I picked 1080i obviously. DVD's do look better, but Im not sure what to set all the options for the best output in games, and movies. If anyone could give me a few hints, that would be great.

Oh, and who has a copy of Motorstorm they want to let go for cheap? :)

(sorry if this doesnt go here?)

for DVD upscaling, i would set it to on or full; on will upscale all movies and retain the aspect ratio of your 4:3 films, full will do the same but stretch 4:3 films to fill the screen.

set output to YPbPr instead of RGB. go to display settings and check all resolutions your set supports (or select automatic). also enable YPbPr super-white. setting RGB to full depends on your set and it quite complicated to find this out, but in most cases, you'll want to set RGB to limited so thats a safe start. if blacks look washed out and grayish, try setting RGB to full.

if you really want to have all your settings set correctly, you'll need a home theater setup disc like Avia, Digital Video Essentials, or at least the THX optimizer test (found in THX optimized films that have a THX logo on the case). first thing you'll need to do is set brightness, contrast etc to the correct levels using the setup disc with output set to YPbPr. then to see if your set supports the full RGB range or not, you'll have to see which RGB setting (full or limited) matches your YPbPr setting (most importantly, check to see if your brightness settings match). this way, you'll have the correct settings for both blu-ray/dvd and games.

YPbPr is the best setting for blu-ray/dvd movies but PS3 games are RGB regardless, this is why its quite complicated to setup your PS3 the best way. an easy way around this is to set your blu-ray/dvd movies to output to RGB too so your dvd/blu-ray settings should apply to PS3 games as well.

hope that helps and that its not too confusing.

Does your tv support 720p? as most of the games only run at 720p...
If not, you can play SuperStardust HD or Lair as they run at 1080p

P.S ps3 games are region free when played on a HDTV so you can import some games...
Its cheaper to do that in Australia.

Don't folks download some of the content from the Akamai servers using the link from the PS Store? Or does that work for video content only (since demos require install and such)?

You can download them and install them via proxy so you don't have to use the store.

Why faff with proxies n shit? It doesn't take so long to just download a demo straight from the store that one can't survive waiting for it to finish.

Any energy spent on trying to speed up this process speaks of a distinct lack of better things to do/life IMO. Go read a book or something instead while the store downloads stuff toyour consle.
Peace.

Thanks for all the replies. I was wondering about that super white, but I left it alone.
Ill dig into those settings more.

Didnt know about half.com, seems fairly nice. Thanks.

Yeah it supports 720p, which the Dirt demo defaulted to. Whats the difference between 1080p and 1080i? Mine doesnt do p, I know its fairly new, and my set is 2.5 years old. Bought it just before the Superbowl in '05.

In my experience, most tvs that support both 720p and 1080i look better in 720p, especially for game related stuff. But your mileage may vary of course. For me it's noticeable.

Full RGB and Super White are options I don't think are supported by TVs older than 2 years, but I may be wrong. My TV is a model released somewhere November 2006 and it supports Full RGB.

Typical TVs that look much better with Full RGB settings are those which support some form of dynamic contrast. I was very pleasantly surprised that I could enable Full RGB and suddenly experience the same levels of brightness and darkness that Dynamic Contrast enabled, without being dynamic ... i.e. both extremes are available at any time so the TV isn't adjusting realtime. It was a great improvement in picture quality for me, and suddenly black is very black, even though I have an LCD and the brightest whites on the screen stay at the exact same level. Awesome.

Cant he change the display settings while in-game btw with the new firmware?

If yes, he can check which setting looks best easily

Thats a good idea Nesh, Ill try that.

One more Q, related to an earlier one. Im trying to change my avatar, with a picture on a SD card. But when I go to it, it says no media. Does it have to be in some certain format, local, or something?

true. Vegas is the best example of a game that looks much better at 720p but that is the only game that looks noticeably better at 720p. i guess you could say GT:HD looks a little better at 720p too because it has AA, but its not quite as sharp. because i own R6 Vegas, i now have my PS3 set to 720p max because i'm too lazy to switch (hoping they release a patch).

afaik, most HDTV's use the limited RGB range (16-235) and most monitors use the full range (0-255) but there are exceptions, i don't think it has much to do with the age of the set. as for super-white, all HDTV's with HDMI support YPbPr, therefore, i think should support super-white as well. i think you have to enable super-white to pass the blacker-than-black test. i don't think it hurts to enable it anyway.

essentially, all RGB full/limited really does is change the black level (aka brightness). if your set brightness correctly (with a home theater setup disc) at full/limited, you shouldnt be able to see any difference. thats why i personally recommend to set RGB to whatever matches YPbPr levels because YPbPr is recommended for blu-ray/dvd movies and its the only output that will pass blacker-than-black on the PS3.

my Samsung LCD has the ability to change to full/limited range within the menu, so i have my Samsung LCD set to Full range and my PS3 set to Limited and that way my black levels match YPbPr levels so i can use the same brightness setting for both blu-ray and games. i can do it the other way too and have my LCD at Limited range and set my PS3 to Full. the way i confirmed this was i set brightness with my home theater setup disc (Avia) with br/dvd output to YPbPr, then i set br/dvd output to RGB to see which matched YPbPr levels.

And how do we do this....I havent worked it out yet (well i haven't really tried) but HOW? thanks :)

Unfortunately I have no idea since I dont own a PS3. I only remember what I read about the latest firmware

edit: oh my god. I hope I havent confused it with the FW 2.0 rumor. If thats the case you wont be able to do it in-game. :(

Ah ok i found out - you can only do it for PS2 and PS1 games I think (is that right). It's just on the options menu when you press the home button in game.

Ps. Only just got streaming working - had to do lots of crazy opening of ports on my firewall. But now it works perfectly! I'm really impressed - can free up my HDD as well by streaming music etc :)

What is the option called in the Samsung menue ? Is it the "HDMI black level "setting - Normal/low?
I have the HDMI level set to normal and the PS3 set to full...

Great, that worked. But for some reason it doesnt show the pic in the thumbnail, and when I try to get a picture for my avatar, it says it didnt find any media.

Its just regular .jpb files, do I need to do something different?
