Again i'm new to this world, but find all the tech interesting!
I have a 360 and a PS3 so I just want something cost effective.
Sorry for being off topic.

The GPU is horrible and you won't need that much RAM in a system like that.

Better to just get 2GB RAM and spend the extra on a decent GPU.

Something like this would be massively better from a GPU POV:

[strike]You can do better if this PC is intended for gaming (you'd still need a GPU, no need for 8GB of RAM).[/strike]

Edit: Turns out that's not such a bad deal. Add a $90 HD4830, $100 LCD, mouse/kb, Vista, and a willingness to overclock and you can make a decent rig out of that for a little over $700. Keep in mind though that deal is considering mail in rebates which are a hassle at best...

What's your budget? It'd be interesting to try and put together a decent gaming PC for $400...

hey, my budget is $500ish–there are some rigs for 500-600 at cyberpowerPC.com
there are so many options its confusing. i mostly use a MacBook Pro for design
but wanted to see what the PC gaming world is like.

I already have a 360 and a PS3 so do i really need a PC too?
Thats the question....

Uhh of course because games on PCs are just much better. Just kidding. It all depends on what you want to play and what you think are missing from the console experience. If you want super realistic any game then yeah PC is where its at...sims, fps's etc. But if you just want to have fun I must say consoles are quite fun.

Why kidding? By all measurable standards that I'm aware of PC games are generally better than their console counterparts. But hey you're right you can still have tons of fun with a console. Just ask us Halo fanatics. Wow sorry for the OT.

helvetica, what sorts of games are you interested in? In any case, of course you don't need a PC...

The CPU is a cheap, outdated power hog quad core (it's a Phenom with the TLB bug! old shit they want to clear out of inventory). The integrated video is nice if you want to use it (not the case). The 8GB ram is nice if you want to run a heavy database server or whatever. The PSU has a weird branding, you are better off with a good brand 400W rather than a 650W noname one.

so, a more balanced choice is something like a Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 mobo or equivalent, phenom X3 720, 2x1 or 2x2 GB PC6400, radeon 4830, 4850 or geforce 9800GT, Corsair CX400W as a good PSU, and the one HDD right now is a 640GB western digital.

You can build a faster cheaper system from newegg.
I did some looking and here is what I found.

This is $406 with out shipping and with MIR its $376 with out shipping.

$74 GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 (has a $15 MIR so $59)

$120 AMD X3 710 tri core at 2.6gig

$33 DDR2 800 4gig kit

$60 Seagate new 500gig single plater drive.

$89 AMD HD4830 512meg. (has $15 MIR so $74)

$40 Rosewill 500W PSU

$30 Rosewill Case.

The Rosewell PSU are not high end nor low end. There very good for there prices. Even JohnnyGuru like them for there price too and he makes PSU scream in his reviews.
