I used to think cell is overhyped after seeing ps3. but i calm down and see more, well cell potentially a good chip, a good earthly one, not heavenly sent.
it looks like a powerhouse to make 3d graphics, while physics and ai seem need to retuned to work on such chip.

Whats overhyped is the whole 'cell saga', the 'cell architecture', the 'cell world' etc. Its become worse depend on places you read about it. On sony favored forums, multiply that 5 fold, thanks to the fans who took sony hype and literary recampaigned it orders of magnitude higher.

Take for instance, search for 'vince' here, the way he sells it and the group who came together and accept the sales. :shuuders:

if the vince saga tells anything, again, is to play cool with sony claims. acutally i dont mind sony PR, is within my expectations, but their fans magnifying it...

Read this forum. It is pretty hard to find things announced that aren't overhyped.

hey megadrie1988 you consider apply for console mod? :D

You don't have the power to start public elections on who's mod, just because you happen not to like the present ones, chap, or just because you just so happened to have been banned a few times.

I do agree that there should be more mods.

I don't think Cell has been overhyped. It's had the usually 'ground breaking, new world order' labels bandied about, as though it were to revolutionise everything ever. But every tech has this adn though it annoys me, one gets used to it. Cell has certainly delivered - a 4x 1:8 config would provide 1 TFlop theoretical peak. The area of most confusion is what people were expecting in PS3. They thought this config would be there, but though I think it was a target, it was never a guarentee.

The key point for Cell really, which is an area of hype, is whether STI are right in their thinking. KK is saying existing processors were designed for WorkStation (wordprocessor, database, work-related) applications and extended for entertainments, whereas he wants a machine designed from the ground up for entertainments, but still as versatile as a computer. In this I think he's right. Every once in a while it's good to drop legacy and start afresh with a clean design specific to the task.
