Intels 6 Core Penryn

Thanks for the info, sounds great. Imagine 2 of those CPU's on Intel Skulltrail motherboard!

I don't think they'll do.
"Skulltrail" uses Socket "J" LGA771 for the Xeon 5000/5100/5300 series (as opposed to standard desktop's Socket "T" LGA775 for Core 2's).

This "Dunnington" Xeon appears to be compatible with "Tigerton" systems (Xeon 7000 series and up), which would imply that it only works in Socket 604 motherboards.
I could be wrong, though.

If it's a drop in Tigerton replacement then it'll sit in the Caneland platform and therefore is indeed Socket 604.

Lots of processing cores is all well and good, but the platform isn't especially well rounded. I looked at a Caneland box when I was writing for HEXUS (review here) and was able to run the database test on a quad socket, dual-core Opteron 3GHz system. This out-scored the Tigerton and reached 100% CPU occupancy, while the Tigerton LV chips stuck at 66% CPU occupancy, presumably due to a lack of memory bandwidth.

CSI will no doubt sort that out though.
