If I just got an X360...

Ugh, scary.

I think I like Viva Pinate better than GoW. I could see shimmers/jaggies way too much in GoW and using a controller instead of a mouse/keyboard I just don't think I can come to grips with.

VP was interesting though, I'm betting my kids will love it.

Gears of War takes about 1h even from seasoned pad-players to get comfortable with the controls, after that it's pure gaming heaven. Try harder grandpa! :devilish:

I hope you'll do the game justice and give yourself some time to get used to it. I hadn't played any aiming-intensive games for a number of months, and recently went back to play through Gears of War. I couldn't aim for ____ for at least an hour, if not two or three.

Of course, I've never been one to complain about analog sticks for aiming in FPSs anyhow. Precise aiming is of course not nearly as easy, and there are some very different methods to going about aiming precisely (i.e., movement and aiming, though on separate analog sticks by default, can't really be separated at all in terms of aiming well in a relatively-fast-paced/Run-and-gun style FPS on consoles). Not that that's anything more than a tangent to this topic, and even Gears of War, being a third person cover shooter based on "stop and pop."

Edit: I'll also second the advice to play on no less than Hardcore in the game. It really just IS NOT fun on the easiest setting (IMO).

Stick with gears. It will reward you for it.
It's not until your second or third play through, or decent number of multiplayer games.. Then you really start stringing the moves together, and simply kicking arse :) It's very satisfying when it all comes together. It's once you start not thinking about the moves, but thinking about where to move - ie tactics - that it gets really interesting. I was very tempted to return the game in the first couple of days. I'm very happy I didn't.

But yes viva is good too.

Well, the kids LOVE VP...they've been playing since they got home from school 4 hours ago and they just automagically ate their dinners when I set them in front of them.

Gotta make 'em stop and do homework soon, that won't be fun; but they sure like the 360 a whole lot better than I thought they would. :)

Warning Dig, VP is not just a kids game. The kids will get to a point where they'll quit playing, but by that time you'll be so addicted you wouldn't let them play anyway. :)

As for converting from keyboard and mouse to a controller, I say give it some time. I had a hard time converting to the controller back in 2002/2003 when I bought the Xbox to play Halo. It didn't take overnight for me, and I doubt it will for you either. I'd give it a week or two. By then you'll be used to playing from your couch or Lazy Boy and wonder why you ever played in your office chair.

I like my office chair! :???:

The pups don't jump on me and try and lick my face off when I'm in my office chair the way they do when I'm in our over-stuffed leather monstrosity in the living room.

Yea it took a while for me to get use to console gaming. Going from the chair to laying around the couch/floor and learning how to play FPS. But now it feels like 2nd nature :)
