How will 128 and 8x AGP help in future programs?

I use programs because the games word seems to boot me from here even though it relates, so just imagine the switch if you will.

How will 128megs of video memory help with existing programs and future programs? I will be purchasing a laptop soon with a Radeon Mobility 9600... I hear the 128meg part wont come out till Q2 2003! So I may just settle with the 64mb variant(let me know if anyone hears anything different on this timetable and facts).

I want to be able to do things on the level of games like Doom3, and EQ2 and such. Will 64mb video memory run them smoothly? I don't want to get stuck buying the laptop and worry about 64mb video memory not being enough to run them decent.

Also, how will 8x AGP affect the programs? Combining all this, do I really have to worry about getting the ATI Mobility 9600 64meg version?

Well, Q2 starts in April.

128MB is becoming more and more important because game's are using higher-fidelity textures and have more texture layers, in addition to more effects and such. More memory will also allow more antialiasing , but I'm not sure how much memory the 9x00 cards use for their antialiasing, but it's a big issue with my 8500 64MB.

128 is the way to go.

Try and wait for the 128 meg card. More ram can't hurt esp if you like fsaa. But a laptop would become more limited for games quicker .

Either way laptop gaming is an excercise in futility. Unless you want to buy a new laptop ever 6 months, you're not going to be able to play current games on them.

I think if he waits for the 128 meg verson of the 9600 he will have a decent set up for doom3 class games. Of course with the same money pumped into a desktop he will have a kick ass set up for doom3 class games. But some people don't have the room. Or some people (like me) want gaming on the go and also be able to work on thier papers for school
