How do I get my sound card to work?

My sound is gone, my soundcard (Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value) is installed
but clicking on "Sounds and Audio Devices" only shows greyed out options.
I have no soundcontrol, no sound icon in task bar. "Sounds and Audio Devices" window from the control panel has the "Volume", "Audio", and "Voice" Tabs greyed out with "No Playback Devices" "No Media Devices" etc. showing in the greyed out dropdowns, indicating no sound system installed.
OS is ME and I've tried re-installing the sound card with the Dell supplied CD with
no success.
I've downloaded drivers and installed them with no success.
Any help out there for this problem please? One more thing, my shift>left
mouse click or shift>arrow to highlight text, or select a number of files etc...

What does the device manager say? Is the card present? You may try to change the PCI slot and reinstall the drivers/SW.

How do I get my sound card to work?#1

In device manager under "sound, video and game controllers" it shows "Creative SB Live! Value (WMD)". I haven't tried your other suggestion yet.
