but you cannot hate parallax mapping.
Yes you can - either hate a particular use of it, or just the general look it gives to things. I for one despise shadowmapping in most HD games(only chosen few do it right), even though there currently aren't any technically better alternatives.
It's one of those things where IQ is very often a step-down from last gen, even in highest profile titles.

Thanks=]

The max size of a DS game is less than 1/4 the size a ps1 game can be. ~128MB (i.e. ~1Gb) vs ~650 MB. Shorter games, lower quality video codecs, lower quality and less audio. Although I guess one could argue that PoR's synth music was almost as much of a geniune aural pleasure to some people as much as SotN's music was.

The PS1, and even the genesis run at a higher res than the DS, and the DS is hardly an improvement over the GBA, in that area.

The DS has only an 18 bit palette; the saturn, ps1, jaguar, and 3do all have 24 bit palettes. I guess one could argue that the other systems i mentioned usually don't run in more than 16 bit simultaneous colors.

If the DS didn't exist, then 2D games would have to be in HD (i.e. on the x360, pc, and ps3) or at least on the psp.

It's ruining the tech quality of every 2D castlevania since it's taking 2D games from the consoles, pc, and psp.

But yes, I do like the VC for every system, but those games were released in the past, so the graphics are fine and I have to give nintendo a lot of credit in that area for not screwing them up (i.e. carefully emulating them.)

I hope no one here thinks I'm retarded for thinking 2D games would be a lot better (at least in tech quality) if they were on the current gen consoles.

I'd go as far to say that nintendo should've kept the gamecube alive alongside the wii so the 2D game quality would be better than it is. Think about how much better a 2D metroid would be on the GC in 480p compared to the 98 pound weakling (i.e. the DS.)

Compression has come a long way since the PS1 was around. Not only that, but usually big games had a lot of FMVs and CDDA tracks. The DS' max file size hasn't even been determined, as it could easily get bigger as the years go by. All cart based systems have had this happen, the DS won't really be any different.

The only reason 2D games on the DS don't usually get as good looking as the PS1 is simply due to time and resources. I'm sure you could make a game that has better 2D graphics than any PS1 game could pull off.

But why settle for mediocre than the very best?

Isn't it kind of a waste to put games on the DS when you have much more powerful consoles, the psp, and the pc?

Maybe not to some people, but it is to me, and I really don't like how the advancement of 2D games has come nearly to a halt.

The way I personally see it is:
Why settle for something in 256x192 when you could have it in 1280x720 or much higher?

I just hope that if ever there's a 3rd entry in Sega's Oasis series from back in the day, that it doesn't come out for the ds.

I hate to drag this even further off topic, but I think you're blaming the DS for something that's not its fault. SoTN was released on the XBLA, and the PS1 version can be found on the PSN and on the Dracula X UMD with the Rondo of Blood remake on PSP. You could think of those as Konami's test to see the demand for Castlevania on those platforms, and I guess they decided there wasn't enough to make anything new for them.

Konami has a strange perception of what we want, giving us FPS games on a system that sucks for controlling them (Coded Arms for PSP) and turning your beloved nightmarish gothic platformer into an emo slap-fighter on the Wii. Elebits? Erase everything you liked about it and throw it on the DS. Metal Gear? Turn that into Yu-Gi-Oh! for the PSP. That's just Konami for you.

2D still exists on home consoles. Wario Land Shake looks to have some terrific animation and sharp hand-drawn designs from Production IG. Braid is feckin' beautiful and runs in HD. PixelJunk is devoted to 2D. And with WiiWare and XBLA allowing small, independent devs to make a buck, there's going to be a lot more 2D stuff coming.

I dunno about you, but I still consider SOTN fucking beautiful. Each time I play it the animation in Alucard's sprite amazes the hell out of me. The DS can do that and more. That's good enough for me, considering 2D is on life support and will be for the next 30 someodd years.

I'd like that to change, yeah, but it's not gonna happen.

Even when you do get a 2D game on a powerful console like the PS3 you might still end up with Disgaea 3. I think we're at the point now where it's very rarely going to be worth it to actually pay for HD quality sprites. Didn't Guilty Gear II go 3D?

GG2 needed to go 3D because it became Dynasty Warriors 2/3/4/5/6/infinity with RTS elements. Can't really do DW style gameplay in 2D.
