HDTVs: Game Mode 2.0... tearing clean-up? What else?

As I say, it's a problem of the IDeds, or whatever it is called, I can't recall.

Do you have the following setting:

Video Display Options – (Available Now, All Regions)
Various improvements have been made to make it easier for you to see your game in the highest resolution possible when using an HDMI connection.

  • Display Discovery - This feature allows you to override audio and/or video formats independent of the display's capabilities.
  • How it works - By default, the console uses the information provided by the display (via its EDID) to determine the audio and video capabilities of the device. However, often the data is invalid or malformed, hence compatibility issues are encountered. When disabling display discovery, the EDID of the display is ignored, thereby, enabling the audio and video settings to be overridden with the desired format regardless of display support.
  • Who should use it? - The Display Discovery feature is available for DVI and HDMI connections in the Display settings section of System Settings in the dashboard. Please note that Display Discovery should only be disabled if audio and/or video related compatibility issues are encountered - otherwise, the output quality may be compromised.

enabled or disabled?

user542745831, I tried to follow your advice and it didn't work. Much obliged anyways.

After setting the name of the HDMI input to "PC", have you tried to switch both the console and the HDTV off and on again at least once to see if that might maybe trigger a new "handshake" between both devices?

I have it enabled, afaik. I can't recall. Gotta check this. It's the EDID thing, not IDed. That's very interesting info.

Oops, silly me.... I didn't turn off the freakin' TV and the console, I did it in "real time", I didn't allow them to begin another handshake, which is ridiculous, but that's the way it is.

Okay. See yah' later. I'm going back to try to fix it now. I will let you know how it goes. Thank you, user.

Well, I restarted both the console and the turned on the TV but it didn't work after naming the HDMI input to PC.

With Display Discovery enabled I could select between 480p, 720p and 1080i, (those are listed with a letter instead of 1280x720, for instance) and then 1280x1024, 1024x768 and 1680x1050 were also selectable.

Then I disabled Display Discovery and the console asked me to restart in order for the changes to take effect. After restarting the Xbox 360 new resolutions were listed, but none of those worked except for the typical ones. The only odd resolution that worked is 848x480.

I don't know what else to try. I just can't seem to fathom it out...

Something else though:

it would be nice not to have to connect the console to external speakers though

What are you referring to with that?

Do you mean that you would like to get audio into your HDTV while using a VGA cable?

You wrote that this:

would be the HDTV, didn't you?

At least according to the user manual, that HDTV appears to have a 3.5mm Stereo audio input right next to it's VGA input, doesn't it ;)? And it appears to be there for getting audio with VGA, doesn't it ;)?

Haven't you noticed that? Or is that audio input not there on your model?

Did your VGA cable maybe come with a RCA Stereo to 3.5mm Stereo jack adapter similar to what appears to be shown on the following pictures over there for example:

?

:D;)

So that was a great answer. Once again... This was super helpful and interesting. Thanks very much for your help. Wish I had talked about these matters with you before, I would learn a few things and save 30€ in stuff I didn't need.

For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to take the sound out the VGA cable directly to the TV without using a Hi-Fi or surround sytem. I still had perhaps vain hopes that I would be able to fix the 1680x1050 thing but the sound issue was really bugging me. I just prefer the sound coming from the TV despite not being as good as the sound of the surround system I had been using, because some sounds are sharper and because it's easier to control the volume and so on, apart from the reduced latency.

When I played Rock Band 3 and had the console connected via HDMI I had the sound from the HDMI cable and the sound from the surround system at the same time, and there was a tape-delay kind of effect sounding all the time. It added a nice touch but I knew it was the latency because the sound from the TV using HDMI sounded earlier than the sound coming from the surround system.

Also, as I said, being able to control or mute the volume by simply pressing a button of the remote is a huge plus, especially when you need to do that immediately for whatever reason.

On a different note, I had noticed every single socket and input but I mistook the Stereo 3.5mm jack for the optical output. :/ Instead I always tried connecting the RCA stereo cables to the audio inputs closest to the VGA input, obviously to no avail. I even asked a guy about this in person a week ago, and he told me that it was impossible, that it should work, he was very surprised.

Luckily I had the stereo jack adapter featured in your link already, and it was a matter of seconds after reading your post before I get everything working as intended. This is confession time methinks. I am a technology obsessive. And I keep my chin up, but every time I think about how I missed something apparently so simple.... it's a bit of a downer.

But when this happens I know it's such a couple of seconds before I sort myself out.

I really appreciate your intelligence and helpfulness. Without a doubt, the thing I love most about Beyond3D is the people. Everybody's been so nice in general, interesting and welcoming and I really do feel like I am at home here. Even when real life intervenes for a while, I know I'll always come back.
