Hardware Prob (Please help)

Right,

Got my new PC last week, and yesterday i got my copy of WindowsXP 64-bit Edition Upgrade (the trial one). I currently have WinXP Professional.

Tried to install it, but the setup won't detect my hard drive. Which is impossible since my PC is working mighty fine as it is.

The HDD is a SATA, the motherboard is a GB K8T-something, the AMD64 based one.

During setup, Win will ask me to press F6 if i want to setup a 3rd party SATA HDD, which i did, but then it comes back saying i need a floppy with the drivers. Which i only just found so i'll try this when i get home tonight. The thing is, if my PC is working fine now as it is, it means it already has the proper drivers, so why is the upgrade not detecting it?

As i said i could only fiddle around for a few minutes last night, will check this out properly during the weekend...

But am i missing something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

(or i'll just forget about this bloody WinXP-64, although it would have been nice to try it out)

the drivers for your hard drive I believe have to be 64 bit also. Did search for them? I could be wrong

Well, there are NO drivers on Samsung's site (the HDD is a Samsung). So i guess there are no 64 bit drivers for the thing. I'm not sure that's the problem though...

That would mean that nothing would work until i get 64 bit drivers... Which is a bit :| ....

But if that is the case, screw WinXP64...

EDIT: Well, i guess that IS the case... oh well..

Edit: You need driver for the SATA chipset, NOT for the hard drive!

by good fortune I have one machine with A64 - with installed XP64, and SATA hdd ;)
Now - what EXACTLY is your MB ? IIRC Gigabyte has mb's both with Nvidia and VIA chipset (northbridge)
With VIa are k8VTxxxx, with NV are K8Nxxxx
After you identify the mobo - go here:
http://www.planetamd64.com/modules/...cat_id=1&sid=4bca7eb94f61856f267a051cfd4ba733
There you'll find all kind of 64-bit software .... beta versions of course! :)
audio, video, and most importantly - STORAGE ;)
Download best-rated link, put on floppy - it should work (mine mb is Biostar with VIA chipset)
After installing XP64-beta1 be warned:
That's beta 1 - do expect instability from time to time.
probably for someof your hardware you won't be able to find "native" drivers - try with drivers for similar hardware (for example, i did not found driver for Realtek's gigabit ethernet - but following advise on the forum above, tried with driver for another realtek GB controller... and it works flawlessly)
If your video card is ATi - don't expect speed in OpenGL - current drivers don't support hardware OGL. And before I stopped all Xp-style visual effects on my machine (9200 video), I had constant (~ every 5 minutes) messages like "XP detected problem, do you want to send report" ....

hope this helps.

(yes after i disabled visual effects, the machine is 99% stable, used for develop work , all day long ;) )

Thank you very much!
Mine is a VIA based one, and no i don't have an ATI card since i'm using Maya...
Also, since u have it, IS IT WORTH IT (i mean WinXP64)? cuz if it isn't, then i'll spend my time doing something more interesting... like my boyfriend... :?

well ..... try and see ... you need ~ 1 hour for instalation....
If something is not working as expected, you can always install XP32 later ....

I'm developer... for me its priceless... my prrrecious 64-bit PC ;)
As for speed - If you find 64-bit app it will be faster, but that's beta1, I doubt it will be faster (remember to notice something is faster the difference must be ~>20%)

I use Maya. And i guess until they give me a 64bit powered version of it, i'll wait to install it. No point at the moment i guess. At least not for me, I want stability.

Thank you anyway!
