Gmail effect: Yahoo to offer 100MB free space

It's about time i say. And Hotmail is so gonna go down. 2MB is ridiculous.

Still, it's gonna be 100MB full of junk mail, so who cares...

Yea paid users will get "virtually unlimited" space. Or whatever that means. Frankly the only reason I pay to use Yahoo is because I need the POP access. That and the fact that I did all my early signups at my Yahoo account. Gah. Bastards.

just for the sake of facts. gmail wasnt the first to offer 100mb of email space for free. others are currently doing it. a search on slashdot will turn them up. ;)

You are correct. They weren't the first to offer 100MB free space. They were the first to offer 1GB free space. :devilish: :p

is it just me, or is google's offer of a TERABYTE just utterly ridiculous? I know storage is relatively cheap, but this is just strange.

I thought the 1 gig was mostly a big "fu" to yahoo for dumping google as their engine, personally, but now this is getting super-crazy. yay for us, though.

/edit

maybe google is going to host all that by including 1% of your HD space as "communal use" for storage if you use their toolbar in the future? how the hell are they going to pay for the space/bandwidth, etc???

If it was true it would most certainly be ridiculous.

Hotmail's spam filtering has improved massively. I currently get only one or two spam mails a week on my hotmail account, compared to what it used to be, or compared to my private POP3 account, that's like night and day. While 2MB isn't much, at least those 2MB are for real mails that way. I'd still like more space though...

Hotmail already offers more space FOR THOSE WHO PAY. It used to be only 10MB, but now they have up to 100. Not sure what the price is.

Wonder if they'll bump the 2MB limit for non-payers once GMail has been around a while... Also, hotmail vastly overstates the size of each email, so those 2MB may end up only storing about three quarters or half that much in the end.

I know that's cheating!! I noticed that with Yahoo mail too, it's like 33% bigger or something like that! They should be ashamed of themselves.

I thought that was just me. I used my old Hotmail account for group projects and somehow a 48 KB file attachment with two lines of text became a 80 KB email. :?

Yes but often you lose these when you switch internet providers which limits their effectiveness dramatically. By the way, my parents had an AOL account for several years and they always got more spam than me regardless of what AOL claimed their email filters could do.

MMM that's a good idea! But then again, very little out of your collection will interest me... Not saying that i don't watch straight porn, cause sometimes it happens, but not unless it's "diluted"........ :D

Jesus, Gmail is amazing... fast, 1GB storage.... amazing........... (just thought i'd brag about it till i have time...)........

Oh yeah, and Yahoo is getting cool too!

Let's hope they can keep up their services, Gmail wasn't working yesterday. But it's full on today, it's evident there's not a lot of people using it, it's fast as hell.
