GAF implodes after owner Evilore is accused of sexual assault

I'm curious as to how Neogaf and the supposed new site "Reset Era" evolve and compete going forward. I think a lot of the more active users on Gaf are moving on to the new place...but it also looks like some of the mods are going there to. So I'll be curious as to each site is run. Gaf could actually end up the better place in terms of moderation.

Either way which ever ends up being the better gaming news aggregator is the one that I'll end up going to.

How zen of you... old man ;)
My grandpa used to say that the measure of a man is how he deals with a crisis. He fought in World War II so had infinitely more experience of things going wrong than I hopefully ever will. The GAF thing isn't a crisis except for the two people directly involved. In a few weeks we'll see if the GAF community was predicated on the vocal minority, on the greater majority. I know where my money is.

Most people just enjoy talking about things that interest them, e.g video games.

I think this is entirely true. Many communities are built around 50/50 of a very active small user base and a less active, but much larger, user base. Generally the active small user base ends up a echo chamber and the larger more varied but often intimidated by established opinions. In a couple of weeks we'll know which is more important. A small number of people who think they are important or a large number of more-represenative gamers.

Tricky.. :nope:

I think Neogaf won't be the same without the moderators posting in the threads. But it will be easier to control the narrative, ban people and lock threads that way obviously...and creating more oppression.

As long as EvilLore is at the helm, I can't imagine the moderators participating again in the discussions like before. Hence, Neogaf can only become again the Neogaf it was in the 'good old days' if Evillore resigns.

Like we say in our country: whatever the objective truth about the sexual assault accusations, EvilLore has too much 'casseroles'.

And the moderators are now anonymous. That doesn't seem great.

Edit notifications are currently disabled, so now when you or someone else (like an anonymous moderator) makes changes to your posts, no one will know.

Not sure if deliberate or a bug caused by all of the recent changes, but also doesn't seem great.

Edit - Explanation given prior to the thread someone started about this was closed:

"The forum currently is a work in progress and we'll be changing things as we go. We'll be detailing more information a bit later but please be patient for now."

No commitment to this being a mistake as opposed to a permanent change.

People complain abut oppression but Mussolini kept the trains running on time whereas I have to put up with Southern Railway. Personally, I didn't see a huge amount of posts from mods on GAF, very unlike here.

but it's had zero tangible impact on the site's activity,

How do you know that? It "seems" way less active to me. And there aren't really any traffic or active user stats public so we're all just guessing.

Do you know how big GAF was? 50 threads with new posts? There were probably 5000 before. GAF is/was one of the biggest gaming forums on the internet. Even 1% as many visitors as before will still appear to be a very active site.

I suspect it will inevitably slowly ramp back up in activity though. Unless the damage is worse than I thought.

GAF was not that thanks to the meddlesome moderation. I have a hard time believing anybody could post there "normally" without falling afoul of it.

You could only not be moderated if you swung really far left politically, really loved Uncharted and Sony and thought every Sony 1st party franchise is without peer, etc etc etc. Maybe that's you?

And hell even for all that they'd really just ban some people for no reason at all, I guess just to remind who's boss. Remember one their core moderation tenants was "we can literally ban you for no reason, we owe no explanation". It's in their TOS. Which is actually fine and probably in everybody's TOS, but most sites dont live by it.

Another thing they were fond of was banning "famous" people, I guess to prove nobody was bigger than the moderation. Or really just for no reason besides throwing power around. If someone tended to get "too popular", they'd ban him/her just to make a point I guess. Noone was allowed to overshadow the moderation. I remember one example was some Amazon PR guy, he used to post popular deals or something, well he got too popular, banned, didn't do anything wrong.

Plus if you read some of the "gossip" sites a picture really does emerge. One of the mods had pedophile leanings (Opiate), another was a big time druggie (Amirox) who posted frequently about doing and acquiring hard illegal drugs, etc etc. A pattern emerges. That Evilore surrounds himself with some pretty scummy people, that probably kissed his butt in the shady back channel Neogaf elite IRC's or discord or whatever it is nowdays, enough that he liked them and made them mod.

Amirox...did drugs, bragged about physically assaulting his mother and was just arrested on child pornography charges a few months ago... nice fella

I have been to neogaf a handful of times, Im not a hardcore or even moderate gamer so I assume its not for me but still.
IMO It was overwhelming and badly designed, only 2 forums! if a somebody posted a new thread it could be back on page 10 in less than a day!
i.e. you'lld have to dig through multiple pages to find a topic, this could of easily been improved & streamlined/cleaned up by having various sub forums, no idea why they didnt

If you were a member, you could (and pretty much had to) increase the posts per page and subscribe to threads. Most were able to make it work.

Minor digression:
According to Snopes, that was an assertion by those in power that was not carried out in reality. The persistence of the claim is supposedly due to its service as a punchline in gallows humor about the otherwise irredeemable fascist administration.
