From PC to Next-Gen Consoles: Largest Performance Gap...

So I hope that by now I've sufficiently explained why I'm not impressed with the PS3 design in the least. It will probably have close to 1Tflop theoretical performance but I doubt it will ever come remotely close to that.

I have heard that a prototype was tested, IIRC, and sustained performance obtained out of it was excellent, which made them give the go-ahead to continue with the project. After that, they've continued to say how they'd deliver what they'd promised, with due reason.

and if 45nm goes through, as some rumors say....

Getting a processor to achieve theoretical performance isn't hard, getting it to achieve that performance on useful work is another matter entirely.. :)

what if PS3 theoretical performance will be very far from the numbers we heard so far (1 teraflop/s)?
That's what I was told from a couple of sources now..

ciao,
Marco

And the sources are?

Well Sony is clearly doomed because as we all know they need at least 4x the theoretical performance advantage to hope to compete in actual performance.
With Xenon's leaked spec being ~300MFlops or so, anything Sony makes short of 1TFlop will perform worse 8)

And to make matters worse, we all know that Xenon leak is just a ruse, those spec are far too underpowered - real thing will be at least 2-3x higher, and that really means it's all over for PS3, it will be out late, and by the looks of it much weaker too.

Either case it'll give me an excuse to dust off my old SX-4 skills... :p

Which ones? The tripple core 3.5 GHz one? That would only produce about 85 GFLOPS I would guess.

PS. I should add that my estimate of peak performance estimate of a single Cell chip has stood at 200 GFLOPS from the very start it was announced, and since it's all guesswork anyway Ill stick to my first guess regardless of the changes in process technology (it was an optimistic guess at the time anyway, maybe a little pessimistic now ... but who cares).

He's including the GPU specs

What do you think the GPU will be like in Xenon?

Not fair as I doubt the numbers people are thinking about include the GPU as well in the case of PlayStation 3.

2-3x higher than that ?

Tell me you are joking ;)... or maybe it is not needed.

Well it depends doesn't it if PS3 is relying on it's CPU Flops to transform tris etc etc, then it's a fairer copmparison, but it's never going to be apples to apples.

I'm surprised people aren't a bit more reserved with expectations of PS3. Even if does acheive it's theoritical performance, what would really be the point if it's real-world performance is comparable the other consoles? Or, are people NOT expecting all 3 consoles to produce comparable graphics:?:

If this generation is anything to go by, I would think a visual difference would be even harder to spot, as graphics become more and more detailed. (although, with textures being more detailed, one should be able to discern even minor differences in many cases) Either way, perhaps the main "judge" next time around will be frame rate?

It still is not as you exclude that the GPU could help in that area as well: think abotua CELL based GPU maybe.

But this is pure speculation.

Actually it's all pure speculation, since we really know nothing about the exact configuration of the PS3 CPU/GPU's.

I actually agree with the previous poster I think graphical differences will be minimal at best, no matter what the spec sheets say.

) Bang per Buck,

PS3>Xenon>Revolution>PC

what do u mean bang per buck?

our buck or the companys ?

Our buck will be revolution > ps3 > xenon>pc

Companys wil lbe pc < revolution < xenon < ps3

How big is the high-end video card market? Can there really be that many people buying $500 or $600 cards every year?

Plus the prospect of fans all over the place just isn't appealing. Then again, my PC is 6 years old...
