What a weird game. Cool though.
Before I played the demo, I was thinking "What kind of post/review is that ?". After I played the demo this evening, I am with you.
It's an interesting trip but I like it. Someone sleepy was watching me play, but in the end he had to cheer me on as I tug on the folk souls.
It's a bit limited in terms of gameplay, and the loading screens (even if they're just mere seconds from HDD right now) are a bit silly (streaming ftw), but the game looks decent, the gameplay is quite fun (grabbing the souls thing - would be a good fit for God of War
, or obviously that Vampire game) and somehow it's entertaining. I have only played the fairy level so far. I like the character model of Keats a lot, by the way, in the selection screen. Looks very good.
Somehow this game also game me some FF vibes.
First the negatives. The camera is static and bothersome. I have to re-orientate it using L1 all the time. If it were not for the unique game world and gameplay, I would have deleted the demo right away.
I also dislike the RPG style talking. Was told the final game will have real dialogue (as shown in the trailer). If true, a big "Thank You" to the developers.
The play area is constrained. There are also invisible walls preventing me from venturing out.
Now the positives. I love the quirky but beautiful game world. I also like the battle system. Pulling souls out of big monsters is more fun than I thought. I also appreciate the strategy element: Selecting and assigning folks to the Playstation []xO^ buttons.
What brought the whole game to life for me is the Monster Book (I might have remembered the name wrongly) and the soul system. The book is essentially a guide on how to defeat the bosses, but it's done in a twisted humorous way.
The first time I needed to consult it -- when the boss showed itself, I thought I got the wrong book. We burst out laughing when we figured it out in an instant.
The soul system allows the players to collect and use "pokemons" (folks). You essentially fish the souls out from unwilling monsters in a timely fashion. Some folks can deal status attack (e.g., slow down).
I didn't see anything related to online play. So I don't know if there's any.
Overall, I will keep an eye on it. The game makes me smile, but I suspect some may not like the SIXAXIS use (It works great but people have inertial).
"What a weird game. Cool though." indeed.
