Now people, help me - I need games!
I'm not in the mood for spending a lot more but I need a good game or two to play with the family. Nice classics that people will have a good time with (2 player). Any suggestions? I reallly went into the PS2 for ICO, MGS2 and SH3 but now I realised the family can have some fun too. Fighting games are okay I guess, racing is okay too.. PS1 games welcome too. I need inexpensive, *must own* classics.

Thanks! :)

Check out the reviews for the following and see what you would like:

2/4 player games versus:
Frequency, SSX Ticky, Gran Turismo 3, Burnout 2, Twisted Metal Black, Pro Evolution Soccer 2 (not sure if that's available in AU), Madden 2003, NFL 2K3, Extreme-G 3, Virtua Fighter 4, Tekken 4, Tekken Tag Tournament, Timesplitters 2.

2 player games co-op:
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Klonoa 2 (2nd player function is quite limited, but nicely executed)

1 player games you may want to check out:
Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Rez, Sly Cooper, Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Escape from Monkey Island, Mark of Kri, Devil May Cry, Ace Combat 4, Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, Silent Hill 2, Onimusha, Onimusha 2, Final Fantasy X, Rygar

PS1 games:
MGS (surprisingly good looking for PS1, and extremely well done and fun game), Silent Hill, Ape Escape, R-Type Delta.

ICO would be my first recommendation of all games, but I see you already have it :)

You should have gotten the Xbox. :(
It is like buying a GF2 instead of a GF3.

stupid remark.. with a geforce 2 or a geforce 3 you can play the same game.
with a PS2 or a xbox you can't play the same game.

the PS2 is in no way obsoleted by the xbox or the GC and it has *lots* of great games inc. exclusive titles. and games are very important you know..

Thanks for the recommendations! Yes, ICO I bought months before owning any console. ;) It's the game that made me  and decide on a PS2 in the first place.

chap:
The sales manager was trying to get me to buy a Xbox. He was saying how 80AUD is a total rip for memory card - which I agree with. But then I totally don't trust HDD these days, so the Xbox is off the mark too. Overall the Xbox is just not my thing. It looks like a super beefed PC while the PS2 actually looks like something out of the 21st century - even if designed in 1999. Looks aside, it's all about the games. And the optical out for my MD.

JF,

dont put the PS2 on the ground like that. It gets full of dust in a second.

As for the game, I agree with what Marconelly said.

EDIT: oh, do 2 things. Buy an RGB SCART cable. Buy a DVD-Region X. It gets rid of the green screen when whatching a DVD movie via RGB. You may want to mod it to get the same result, but I'm aware there are no RGB-mod schemes for the lates PS2 model. It's a V7 I guess.

80AUD for a PS2 memcrap!!!!!?
I could get that for half that price! Is that Sony official retail price in Australia?

Well atleast one of your buys was justified, witch one?
You tell me...

If all PS2 comes bundled with some swedish quality we may actually se
a huge growht in this country- :D

No offense intended and completely OT, but everytime I scan your name really fast, I get "Aryan Pride". It's just the combination of letters, unfortunately. ;)

The game that lead to my finally taking the PS2 dive was GT3. In fact, it was the GT3 package I bought. If it were right now, I would say Need 4 Speed HP2 would be the game to induce me to get a PS2. ...but I've always had a special relationship with NFS series. It was NFS2 that made me buy a PSX, and the original NFS that appeared on the 3D0 was a blast.

I don't know if it was mentioned earlier, but Gauntlets Dark Legacy is another fun 4-player enabled game (if you enjoyed playing Gauntlet back in the day in the arcades, that is). "Elf is about to die..." Gobble, gobble!

LOL *phew*.. At least it's not "ASIAN PRIDE". That's what most people ask. grr...

Right now, when I watch 16:9 DVDs, it squishes it back to 4:3. I can't change it no matter what - only on PC does it insert black borders. How much is a VGA cable to connect the PS2 to my Monitor? Money is flowing like water..

Yes, chat, this country Sony overprices their prices even further. Which is why I was forced to buy the tripleback, which is Remote + Memory + 2nd Controller for 120 AUD. (60USD)

Edit: BTW Guys- American cookies just doesn't go with Swedish Vodka..

Have you played around with your screen settings menu (PS2 on and no games or DVD's in drive)?

If you are into sci-fi movie xovers, you may also enjoy the Terminator and Thing game. Red Faction2 is also worth a try.

No offense, but those cookies are just awful.

As far as DVD playback goes, rest assured there's something wrong with your settings. I've never even eard anyone to have such problem with widescreen DVDs, much less experience them myself.

Boot your PS2 without any disc in the drive and go through the settings. Also, while you are playing the DVD movie, make sure to look into the on-screen settings that you can activate.

What kind of TV do you have? 4:3 or 16:9? Does it have anamorphic squeeze feature?

Remote + Memory + 2nd Controller for 120 AUD.
This seems much more reasonable. :)

But a standalone Sony memory crap is officially selling at 80AUD, throughout Aussieland? That is a big fuckin ripoff if there is any.

That I can agree with. If there's anything I'd like to see the PS2 incorperate, then it's the Memory Stick. I'd buy a 32MB memory stick and that'll be the end of it. Don't know why they didn't do it, maybe it's just to collect the higher margins they'd get with the memory cards.

yes this would be the best choice.

most newer 4/3 tv sets and 16/9 compatible (in europe): they support a 16/9 signal, they add the black borders.

it's a lot better than the DVD player creating a 4/3 letterboxed picture, because of the better vertical resolution.

look at your tv manual, chances are it is 16/9 compatible.

anyway you could just try to configure the DVD player for 16/9 output and see if it works on your tv.

For the memory card, official price is HK$160, but street price is HK$140, 7 colors to choose from, and also a classic black one

For the 4:3 letter box playback and full playback setting, check the TV type options of the PS2 DVD player

Sorry that I only have Japanese version of the DVD player

edit: press "Select" to show the controls

That being the case, that sales manager should not be working in retail. I have never understood the mindset of a lot of retail goons - how does it affect them in the end if a customer buys one console over another?

Regardless, congrats on your purchase, you won't regret it. What has been mentioned in this thread as recommendations are all great games to start off with, paticularly ICO - that game is magic.
