Final confirmed Jan NPD's

Yes thank you consumers of america for rejecting sony's outragous pricing. I just wish the people of europe would follow suit with japan and america and give sony the middle finger. MS just scored the biggest victory against sony in a decade. The Wii just continues to kick ass I wish I could find one to purchase.

Incredible that the XB360 is beating the PS3 hardware by such a large margin that close to launch.

I would think this puts a damper on all the "360 needs a new sku" talk too.

At least, they dont need one to stimulate sales which was the prior reasoning.

It also cast the low shipment forecasts by MS in a new light..almost certain to be channel clearing in preperation for new sku's/price cuts now rather than reaction to slowing sales.

I was 14k off with my 230k prediction for the PS3... still closer than the common 300k prediction, and much better than the wild 500k ones.

So much for the PS3 passing 360 like it's standing still like some *cough* pachter *couch* predicted!

PS3 library looks fairly dry too for the forseeable future, when is the next AAA title scheduled?? I guess we're looking at Holiday 07 for HS and MGS? If so, PS3 is in for a rough ride, a pricedrop in spring might be exactly what the doctor ordered though.

MS should drop price on the 360 soon, and capitilize on the situation if they want to really take a solid lead going into 2008, and Nintendo, well people are buying, they just need to keep making a solid stream of games and they could be a force this generation. The attach rate of Wii is still very interesting to me though, we'll have to see how much software these new gamers actually buy...

For the PS3 numbers, one way to look at it is that is that US consumers are still spending more dollars on PS3 hardware than they are on Wii hardware. Even if you count all units sold as the cheaper $500 model, it's still $122mil spent on a PS3 vs $109mil spent on Wii.

The PS2 numbers are still just shocking. When you compare them with Xbox and GC numbers - doubly so.

Yup, I was in the 300k boat myself.

Mind you I don't think it's a bad performance for the console at all - PS3 doth yet live. But it's an exceptional performance from 360 given its retail context at the moment.

Michael Patcher..well he will have to revise his predictions again. It'll be intresting to hear how he explains the numbers.

The issue with PS3 is mainly games. There is only 1 killer app (Resistance). VF will boost just a bit but there aren't that many fighting game fans.

If things doesn't change when PS3 has 4-5 very good games out there then I'd be worried. But selling 240k, at that price point with only 1 killer game speaks well for the PS3.

Speng.

It is pretty big that PS3 managed to sell that well, considering lack of games - 15 new ones in March should help.

Take it easy on price drops everywhere, soon enough PS3 and 360 will be free :). They are in it for the money, and even MS is constantly losing money on 360, very much doubt that any kind of price drop is coming.

Look at it this way - PS3 sales Japan+USA are already gaining on 360, which I would expect this soon in PS3's life. Add Europe in March, and PS3 will pickup pace by mid-year...

and finally Resistance sold over 100,000 copies for the month... good job. It is pretty tough for them, being launch game and all.

Considering a 5 week month for a system the just launched I would say it is bad performance. That is around 50k a week very very weak for the big dog of console gaming. The PS3 should be riding a launch momentum wave like the 360 and Wii.

Thanks for the update. I love that game. Am still playing it ferociously :) (like from 10pm to 5am yesterday... errr... this morning).

The PS2 and 360 had 0 killer apps at launch. Games is not an excuse it is price and price alone killing sales.

Who would of predicted 12 months ago the PS3 being the 3rd most sold console?

Launch to date, PS3, while being 50% more expensive, sold more than 360 in its intial sales period.

Does that make it better? Or was it supposed to outsell 360 by 10x to make it acceptable? :).

PS2 had horrible launch games yet was sold out for months, I don't think a console with such a strong brand, that has been 7 years in the making, should need games to sell over 1mill consoles in the US in the first 3 months.

And you're wrong on your second point, if you count WW sales, MS continues to increase it's overall lead. PS3 sales in JPN are equally poor, at a mere 80-90k/month. MS ships 50% of it's consoles to EU, so it's safe to assume it sold ~150k there this month, and in JPN 360 has been posting ~25-30k/month recently.

I'm really surprised with people saying these are solid numbers, these are on the far end of the bad spectrum of bad to good, borderline horrible numbers for Sony's new console 10weeks after launch.

360 didn't really ride a launch momentum wave at all, because it was supply-constrained. When the supplies showed up, the numbers looked like this. Wii's in its own league. I know it might drive you crazy that I don't agree with you, but yes at $200 more with one good game, I don't consider the performance a bad one. I was expecting just 50k more afterall, and myself considered that level to be 'good.'

Anyway I view the numbers as 360 and Wii positive, and PS3 neutral. 360 did (much) better than expected, PS3 a little under what was expected, and Wii what was expected.
