Favourite FreeWare?

What is everyone's favourite freeware?

Having trouble installing MSOffice 2000 on WinXP Pro, I decided to try Sun StarOffice 5.2. It's very good for freeware, although it takes some getting used to, after using MSOffice for so long. It does everything I need, but it seems a bit slow in starting up.

I another program which I found to be quite useful is AVG's Anti-Virus System. Not only is it freeware but its also gives you free virus updates too.

Of course how can I forget my favourite piece of freeware SiSoft Sandra 2002.

Heh, I love Trillian, if it had a whiteboard and could work with MSN's voice chat, it'd be amazing!

Some rumours that Sun charge for staroffice ($50 to $100)

Yes, StarOffice 6.0 costs money, but You can use the OpenOffice 1.0 instead. IMHO the only drawback is they have no spell checker and a few different not so important things missing. The spell checker for instance is from an different company, so Sun can not use it for the OpenOffice too.

Arachnophilia (HTML editor)
Ad-Aware (Lavasoft.com?)
BSPlayer (video player, lowest CPU util)
Coolmon (PC stats, Arsware.org)
Folding@Home (donate CPU cycles for a good cause)
IrfanView (picture viewer/saver/cropper)
LeechFTP (to queue Internet downloads)
Motherboard Monitor (keep tabs on CPU + MB temp, for OC'ers)
NetStat Live (keep tabs on internet usage + speed, analogx.com)
NoteTab Light (excellent notepad replacement)
PowerArchiver 6.11 (no annoying WinZip prompts)
PowerDesk (> Explorer)
Proxomitron (filter pop-ups)
Sasami2K (video player, nice GUI)
SmartFTP (open-source)
Tiny Personal Firewall (smaller than ZoneAlarm, rule-based--tougher to setup, but offers more control--TinySoft.com)
TxtPrint (useful for printing code)
Winamp (and Geiss3D, Milkdrop, and Smoke for plugins)

I've heard GuildFTP is a good freeware FTP server.

That's enough for now. :) Google 'em up for links.

BTW, how do you like AVG AV? I'm not sure I trust freeware AV programs--I'm paranoid that way. But my Norton has lapsed, and I've yet to buy another $12 Norton Systemworks Pro (AV, Utilities, Ghost)--an unbeatable value, IMO.

I use AVG and pass off the URL to anyone looking for a virus scanner, I have'nt heard on complaint yet and I know people who've tossed the scanners they paid for, to use AVG.

One other not mentioned on that site is "Gravity", a top notch news/Usenet reader for windoze. It was shareware (which I bought) but is now free.

Just tried GuildFTP (only on my local LAN), and it seems pretty sweet. Not sure if it has any gaping security holes, though.

I like Exult but I have certain ulterior motives, and while the engine is free, the content isn't (not ours obviously).

Wow. I used to think U7 was the shiznit. When I looked at some of those screenshots, however, I thought "eeewwww".

But, of course, I had this wierd thought that C64 games were the pinnacle of quality and deep thought. Then I played them on a C64 emulator. Bleh. Anybody who says games these days suck should go look at what was made in the past.
