Famitsu Scores The Wind Waker Full score!

Grade: 10

"A level of astoundment that exceeds even that exhibited by the previous "Ocarina". Despite being a completely new and ground-breaking work, it's amazing how this title managed to retain everything that defines 'Zelda' to begin with. If you're looking for a new plane of visual expression in games, one different from both photorealistic and anime styles, it can be found right here. Also features a unprecedented depth of story and adventure within the series that takes place across an ocean. To sum up: this title is 100% zelda, and is an absolutely must-play title."

Grade: 10
"Utilizing tone rendering as a catalyst of visual expression of sorts and combining it with the highest quality gameplay, game environments and production values, a a miraculous chemical reaction is created with this incredible title. It makes you realize once again that video games truly are the most superior form of entertainment out there. Whatever you do in within the game, it doesn't fail to entertain you in some way. Trust me when I say you won't fail to fall in the love with the world presented within this title."

Grade: 10
"Any pangs of anxiety you might have in regards to the anime-like presentation of this game will vanish once you play this title, which will leave no doubts in your mind that this is truly Zelda. The emotions of the various characters come across with an unbelievable level of realism due through eye-based movements/expressions, and there are times when you'll find yourself extremely affected and even on the verge of tears. With a perfect level of difficulty in regards to both the puzzles and battles, this title rewards you immensely for playing it!"

Grade: 10
"Whether it be the in-game events, puzzles, or presentation, you'll find yourself experiencing a range of human emotions from puzzlement to amazement. Everytime you pick up this title to proceed onwards in your quest, you'll discover an increased level of excitement. I swear to god I felt like a excited child picking up a videogame for the first time when I played this title. The new setup that allows even those who have never experienced the series to immediately feel right at home gets a huge thumbs up from me."

*checks watch*, counting down the seconds until

"I have said for years that I dont trust magazine reviews, especially not
Famitsu, they give out perfect scores like they are going out of style"

Until Zelda gets a well developed narrative, I'll always look elsewhere to get my RPG fix, no matter how great the gameplay is.

Bought it today, some photos from my projector with progressive input.

Well developed characters and stories arent an isolated phenomena to RPGs... many different genres have these traits. Nintendo just puts the emphasis in gameplay rather than other areas. And I, for one, value characters/story/narrative > gameplay.

Few examples off the top of my head:

Fighters - DoA3/Mortal Kombat have always been 'story' driven games, with DoA's pre-fight cutscenes and MKs somewhat extensive (and oddly compelling) backstory.
Action - Metal Gear Solid (x)/GTA:VC/Halo have well developed characters/narrative that work for both linear and non-linear gameplay types.
Horror - Resident Evil / Silent Hill rely on compelling characters and story to add atmosphere/fright.
Adventure - Kingdom Hearts takes Zelda-esque gameplay and adds story, emotion, and various other narrative aspects w/o "dumbing" down the core text or language.
RPG - Final Fantasy anything, Skies of Arcadia, etc any RPG really.

I guess I used "RPG" in my previous post instead of elaborating and saying "story/character/narrative driven game-type of some genre".

My bad.

There are a few N games that might qualify for the above, like Eternal Darkness.

I didnt mean to torch the thread, I was just trying to refine/solve my dislike for Nintendo in my head prior to reading, and thats when it dawned on me that their games are devoid of developed story/narrative/characters (Zelda, Mario, DKong, Golden Sun, etc)

people who say Zelda doesnt have compelling characters and a story, havent played one since LTTP. the Characters in OOT were a lot more compelling than the cheesey backstreet boy clones that graced the PSX's later Final Fantasy games.

if you want cinematics, get a movie, its a game, without gameplay, thats what it might as well be.

Actually, I played OoT, and was put off instantly by the Grade 6 level writing.. it was.. horrendous. Not that there were localization errors, but rather the language complexity was so rudimentary it felt like it was written for a 10 year old.

And what does the graphic character design have to do with the characters narritive attributes? They may have punky hair, but have feelings, emotions, fears, personality quirks, and input constructively to the story (which is more than Link has ever done over all 3 [and probably 4]) systems.

Gameplay's great and all, but without a compelling story to keep me going, my attention span is poofed after 15 minutes.

Let me put it this way, its like comparing Puff the Magic Dragon (which is a timeless classic) to Lord of the Rings. As a twenty-something, which would you find more intellectually stimulating (gameplay aside)?

A Sony troll flaming Nintendo software... who would've thunk it.

This board is not what it used to be.

edit: I guess I should say something. IMO, a troll is someone who, without argument or reason, starts shitting all over something he doesnt like, with nothing to back it up. I've never liked Nintendo, but think I've finally figured out why, and thus presented a theory based around that argument.

Cybamerc, in your very own, oft used, personalized words, "shut the fuck up".

Yeah, wonder where this board is headin eh?

Skies of Arcadia and Panzer Dragoon Saga were the perfect balance, IMO. Nintendo games do tend towards being too simplistic from a story/character/narrative perspective.

In any case, it looks like Celda is a good game. I still wish they'd kept the Spaceworld 2000 look, but I'll still be there in the store on release day to get my copy.

whats funniest, he flames OOT's story, after saying he Player Morta Kombat for its excellent plot... lol

the story was just oozing out of that one..
when you read the entire plot on the title screen, and its nowhere
to be seen in the game, I cant see how it makes any difference
to the game.
OOT is the highest rated game of all time
being Famitsu is a very good source of how a game will score overall.
its safe to assume this one will too

Actually, I was giving examples of game genres that can be positively influenced by a backstory.

I most definitely did not "Player Morta Kombat" solely for its excellent plot

Misfit, go take a lesson from Teasy. Atleast he presents intelligent, somewhat irritatingly poignant counterarguments. You just froth at the mouth, and it drips everywhere.

mmh like many people the guys @ famitsu are biased to their country.

But it's a good indicator of the title value anyway, 40/40 has a real meaning.

I won't comment on other titles mentionned in that thread because I would be really EVIL.

how this for backing something up, when any game on your favorites list hits anywhere near Zelda and Metroid Primes scores in rank, you come talk to me, else, just consider yourself in bad taste.

#1 of all time, Zelda OOT
#2 Link to the past- GBA
#3 metroid Prime- GC

www.gamerankings.com

I think that sums it up as well as it needs to be summed up.

Dude, I don't care! I'm not saying Zelda's a bad game in any shape or form, I'm saying it lacks a strong narrative which is what prevents ME from enjoying it!

God man, read what I said!

Nowhere was I trashing any overall games, rather localizing one specific part of a game design that I put more value into.

edit: WTF do game rankings have to do with anything? If you want to take an exit on to that demented train of "popular opinion > all" thought, then 'come talk to me when your console hits double digit million sales'.

boggle.

This is so sad, you might as well have said - "Hey dude, I don't need my own opinion, www.gamerankings.com has them all listed nicely for me, why think myself? If they list them as best of all time either you agree how great they are now or you have a bad taste in games! There I proved you wrong, duh!".

No opinion is universal and some people just have different tastes. Even your sacred www.gamerankings.com doesn't come close to being the gospel for how good a game is for each and every single INDIVIDUAL out there, and that has NOTHING to do with BAD taste either...
:devilish:
