External power supply for PS3?

there are many, many companies who make silent PSU's for PC's.
And i'm talking about >400watts powersupplies here, and some are fanless.

Bequiet, thermaltake etc etc

This one -> http://www.yesico.de/products/p_fl550atxt.htm as no Fans at all. And its 550watts. and 200$.

PS3 with a Custom Psu (same as saying, size and arrangement isn't fixed to square boxes like PC Psu's), with surely less than 550watts, doesn't sound to be a problem for heat or noise.

Supposedly, Game Informer is reporting it will be an external power supply.

I though PS3 was just going to be a big box, bigger maybe than the original Xbox, with everything inside. And also heavy too.

But still about as quiet as the PS2 Slim, according to Sony?

Its going to be noticably bigger then the Xbox.

Like I said earlier, it's internal. Look closely at the writing next to the connector. It says "AC IN" not "DC IN" as it would if the PSU was external. Above the connector you can also spot a power switch which wouldn't be there if it was an external PSU (Why would it?).

Not to imply that the power supply will be external or anything, but all of the pictures and specs have always been tagged by Sony "Design and specifications are subject to change without notice".

So even if the E3 2006 pics show "AC In", that's no proof of anything, since Sony already said they could change the design at any time.

The PSU part has been pretty much the same for over a year, Do you honestly think they would they change the design in the last 4 months? Especially when they seem to have the temps and noise down. (I say 4 months instead of 6 because AFAIK the same design was shown at the china event which was just a few days ago.)

To be clear, I'm not saying it is or it isn't going to be an external power supply.

All I'm doing is pointing out that posting a picture from E3 does not constitute proof of any kind since the image is marked clearly with a disclaimer that the design could change without notice. Even pointing at mockup units at the China event is useless, since those too are not final and could in fact change.

So unless you have some inside knowledge of what's going on at Sony or a serious leak happens, you can't really assume anything for sure until you see a real final retail unit running real final retail games.

Which is a valid point. Although such disclaimers tend to appear on all pre-final material. Best guess places the final material as the same as the demo material until shown to be otherwise.

That's true but the design has already gone through a redesign since E3 2005 and the case got considerably larger as a result but the AC IN and the power switch remained, didn't they?

I would assume the reason for making the case bigger was necessary due to heat and venting. If they had needed to remove the internal PSU for the same reason I'm sure we'd already seen it on the same redesign we saw at E3 2006. But it's still there and we saw the same design at the recent China showing so imo we have no reason to assume anything have changed or will change regarding the PSU the coming three months.

Most of the so called "fanless" or "quiet" "300+" watt power supplies aren't. A large proportion of them overheat, etc. The ones that work are fairly expensive. And the ones that work rely on fairly good internal ventilation of the system already.

At best, Sony will be able to replicate something like the Antec Phantom using the already exiting internal fans to provide the airflow for the PSU.

well i did not post links to "silent psu's" that aren't. Those are :)

they are PSU's geared at silent watercooling folks, such as me and my thermaltake Silent Pure-power 420watts that whispers if you put the hear close to it.
Enthusiastic components aren't just 600$ graphics cards eh lol

Your right, but unless noted other wise the PS3 will have a internal PSU.

I think they'll work very hard to make it internal.

IT Media closed up the interview by asking Kawanishi if the PS3 has its power source built into the system, like the old PS2 model, or if it is separate from the system, like the slim PS2 and the Xbox 360. "It's of course internal," responded Kawanishi. "It's better that way. We of course do things the good way."

If it's external it wouldn't affect my buying decision since I already own 3 gaming systems with external power supplies. Albiet, the latest one is quite massive compared to the other 2... I just tuck that one neatly near my subwoofer where it get's a good blast of air, everytime the bass hits...

If you think the Termaltake is quiet or silent, you need your hearing checked.
