Does PS3 absolutly needs the Hard Disk?

Greetings:

I have some doubts that maybe someone could help me clear up.

Was the main reason to include a Hard Disk in every PS3 due to the slow transfer speeds of Blu Ray?

This one is more of an analisis. Do you think in the case of Sony adapting a fast DVD drive, would they have included the Hard Disk?

Is electronic commerce a powerful reason to include a Hard Disk? I ask this because as i understand, the disk is a component that doesnt go down in price as quickly as other components during the consoles life.

Are there any other powerful reasons to include a Hard Disk in a console? I've heard developers like hard disks so they can cache data but it isnt enough to have a fast DVD drive or in the future a fast Blu Ray drive.

Thanks for yor time.

"slow bluray speeds" ??? Where did you found that one?
2x Bluray is almost equal to 12x DVD

Hard disk is essential for game devs. Games can be casshed [and installed], no memory card issues, multimedia acces to everyone, downloading content from net... Million good reasons for HDD in every console...

Does the PS3 even function if you take out the hard drive or does it give you an error message :?:

I'll leave the thread in here until further notice (might be moved to Console talk). However, since it is off to a bad start, I'd like to remind everyone to stay on topic and not to drag any X360, etc. talk into here.

I think HDD was mandatory for Sony in it's relation with some publishers, especially SquareEnix, that will be focused a lot on MMO in the future. Sony needs PS3 to be the elective platform for MMO, which seems to be a strong business model for the future.

Another reason could by Linux. It might come preinstalled in the future, if Sony really wants people to forget about placing a PC in the livingroom.

Yep. Sony really wants to their online platform to succeed this time around so a hard drive is essential. You dont just expect to download tons of content in the next 6 years on little memory cards do ya?

Non of those are essential for game devs. Though I think the hdd is ''essensial'' for sony to make the ps3 the machine they want it to be (multimedia device).

I say that the drive may not be necessary though it is helpful in terms of streaming. But the fact that the hdd is upgradeable puts the premium into the hands of the consumer. If one want to install all games onto a drive along with photos and mp3s they will pay for it. I like having this option and if I ever decide to get a PS3 will likely exercise it to avoid slow loading times.;)

Thanks for the replies.

It is?
Can someone point me to an article that talks about the drive speeds?
I was under the impression that the Blu Ray was slower because the launch games had hughe loading times. So we can atribute this to unpolished launch software?

I have not PS3 played a game with bad loading times yet.

Resistance has very fast loading times. Faster than I even expect from my PC FPS games - and PC games don't even load from optical disc.

In 3-4 years when Sony wants to make the equivalent of the pstwo for the ps3 there should be cheap 20gb flash memory units that would fit the bill better than an HDD.

i wonder why they have blu-ray drive when u can install everything onto hdd and require dvd to play. simple way to solve ps3 manufacturing problems (infact bluray delayed launch in europe for a year at least)

the only reason they chat bout blu-ray is because they want blu-ray to become dominant as well as ps. dvd has been fine on high res pc games for years. blue dragon is 3discs ONLY because of long cutscenes which make you wonder whether u are watching the game or playing the game

Ummm... what?
2x Bluray means 72 Mbits/sec.
12x DVD means 132.96 Mbits/sec.

Granted, 12x DVD means 12x at the outer edges and more like 5x (~56 Mbits/sec) near the center vs. 2x Bluray being always 2x, and the "12x" DVD drive in the 360 is actually 8x on a dual-layer DVD, which is more or less equal to a 2x Bluray... but even then the Bluray has worse seek times due to being CLV and having a more massive multiple-laser head assembly.

Now if you have a CAV Bluray drive which is 2x in the innermost tracks (making it something like 4.74x in the outermost), then you've got something fast enough compared to full 12x DVD that it more than cancels out any seek time disadvantage due to the mass of the head.

I thought that one of the properties of BD was the ability to switch between CAV and CLV?
