Do you eat food past it's use by date?

Food that has been at least a few months past it's use by date.

The reason in doing so is that the food is so cheap and it is dry food. I haven't been sick from it.

Why?

Depends on what type of food it is. Dry stuff like grains, cereals etc should last pretty much forever unless contaminated by moisture, insects etc. I've eaten pasta that's been years out of date with no ill effects whatsoever. I've eaten refridgerated eggs that have been at least a month out of date too; they'd evaporated to some degree so after boiling them there was less 'egg' inside the egg, but they tasted just fine and I wasn't sick.

Once in my youth before I knew better I fried up some ground beef that had turned sort of grey in the fridge. It was a couple days overdue, not sure how much, but it didn't smell good at all and tasted sort of weird so I had to throw it away. Didn't get sick though because I made sure to fry it well. :D

I've fried potatoes that had a green tinge to them too by the way, also long long ago. That wasn't a smart idea, they worked sort of like a laxative on me and I didn't feel good at all either, haha!

Sounds like you really like old food Guden.

I'm usually very harsh on overdue dairy products.

I ate rotten eggs once, really really rotten eggs. After that, I couldn't eat eggs for a good long while.. even now they're not exactly my favourite food anymore (I had a cold and couldn't smell how off they were, but when my family came home they commented on how the house reeked of rotten eggs - i blew my nose out, took a whiff, and almost passed out from the horror).

It's not something I do regularly, heh heh. Anyway, a really cold fridge is a good way of extending the freshness limit of food. Turn it down to 4 degrees C and an opened carton of milk will last like two weeks. :D

well grey ground beef only has to do with contact with air or something ..

i've eaten tartar ( at home ) a few times , but i made sure i wasn't using ground beer, and good beef, but i don't know what changed i'm a coward now when it comes to beef , except for steak , i cook burgers a lot longer than necessary

best thing to get is a meat thermometer

i don't think they qualifies as old food but what made me sick , i can't remember what the exact dish was, it was a microwavable chinese thing , strips of something, just to say i was sick for a weekend

Eating a bit old food occasionally probably does more good than bad. Gives some good practice to your immune defense system.

Well, there's a fairly simply test for those - just put them in a bowl of water.
  • If they sink and lie horizontal, they should be fine.
  • If they start to stand a little bit upright then they are starting to go.
  • If they float completely, handle with extreme caution - do not break the shell unless you have no sense of smell:)

Errr... IIRC the green parts of the potato plant are poisonous. You should peel/cut off those bits.

I think this thread deserves its own conspiracy theory....

What if the Use-by or sell-by dates have nothing to do with the actual quality of the food after a certain period of time? What if they are just ways to make people throwing away more stuff, forcing them to buy more? Mmmmmm... ;)

Personally I'd always assumed that this was the case, certainly for dry goods.

While you're at it, tell them that wind farms are not there to generate electricity but to generate wind in the right direction so that the Illuminati can control the earth's weather. :devilish:

 So *that's* why it's always so windy where wind farms are! I feel like such a dolt for not working that out (bangs head on table).
