Aside from letting you do video chat, the upcoming Xbox Live Vision camera for Xbox 360 will finally let gamers put their faces on game characters. This opens a whole new world of possibilities when it comes to multiplayer gaming, as now you’ll be able to recognize your friends in a game simply because you’ll be actually seeing them on screen.

There are already many games that will make use of this facial mapping feature, including and Rainbow Six Vegas, WSOP: Tournament of Champions, and we are just waiting for others to confirm face mapping.

Recently, we had the chance to interview Gary Bracey, the founder and CEO of Digimask, the company that has developed this revolutionary technology. We asked all the questions that you have in mind…

In all fair Digimask is a technology that even PS2 could use..... right? Am I wrong? Its nice to see that maybe finally new console will immerse the gamers into games.

Yeah I beleive tony hawk or socom did something like that, not 100% sure. Considering Rainbow 6 Vegas is multiplatform I wouldnt really call this an exclusive feature unless the PS3's Eyetoy does not have this enabled for this specific game.

Looks like all of them are jumping on board with this this gen. Nintendo debuted this with Wii tennis at E3 and I'm sure Sony will be right in there.
So what are the other possible uses for the camera in games is there?

Ofcourse eyetoy, singstar type games, then you have eyedentify and eye of judgement which seem to take a different approach. Me personally, Im actually more interested in using the camera as a video phone or video conferencing with multiple people. Not really a game console feature ofcourse, but to have a giant video phone in the living room sounds cool to me. (think bttf2)

Yes, you already had this feature among others in Tony Hawk, from the 4th game, I think, on the PS2.

Also, EyeToy Chat already exists, but it's just not that popular yet being an add-on and being on a console with a relatively low online attachment rate. And of course it only works with other PS2 users with EyeToy Chat. It would now become more successful if you had a messenger client to use it with on the PS2 (which by the way would be well suited for it, just use a Singstar microphone and/or a USB keyboard along with it and presto!)

Anyway, the PS3 will support it out of the box I'm sure, so that will help with the attachment rate thingy and no doubt it will be a much bigger success this time around.

MS is definitely playing catchup on this one.

EDIT: ah, Shifty has the good ol' Wiki link.

Actually, after the initial talk of PS3's HDIP camera, it hasn't been mentioned since about it's inclusion as standard. As part of the overall pricetag, including a high definition webcam would add to value, so I'm curious why it hasn't been mentioned? It'd be nice to have it confirmed as standard like the HDD was, and the absence of such noises mkaes me think it'll be a peripheral, which would severely hamper it's takeup and application.

Ah, my apologies ... I meant standard as in 'dashboard' support, standard libraries for devs, etc. Not necessarily a standard peripheral.
