Well the English language would tell us: if something is "detachable", it means that there's something there in the first place that you can "detach".
So, if we look at the litteral meaning of the statement would be "there's a HDD to begine with, and you can detach it (probably to upgrade it to a bigger one).
But hey, they're japanese so you never know.

enlgish language also tells us "slot" is a place to put a detachable hard drive, not a hard drive itself.

I would assume at this point a HD is not being included. Otherwise, it would have been made clear that it was. This doesn't mean things can't change though.

Agreed, if it was an add on, there would be no point in calling it detachable, because if you can attach it you can also remove it.

Right now, it be up in da air. ...and will probably remain that way until the 360 is released and they can measure up the PS3 as a full system against it.

Does PS2 have a detachable hard drive?

PS2 was advertised as having a "optional hard drive bay". Not a "detachable hard drive".
See the difference?

I thought PS3 is being advertised as having a "detachable hard drive SLOT".

Well that brings me to my first posts on the subject a few days ago.

I was saying that "detachable HDD slot" doesn't make sense, cause a slot is not detachable.

Then people came out saying that it's their way of saying "slot for a detachable drive".

In the end, it's still very blurry cause Sony want to wait till MS make their move, before committing to put a HDD as standard straight from the beginning. It's not like the PS3 doesn't cost enough already to manufacture.

Of course.

You are assuming that they should be leaving out the word "slot" so that it makes sense.

I'm saying they should have left out the word "detachable" so that it makes sense.

If the HD is included...where are the pics of the system with the HD attached? What's the current projected capacity of the included hard drive.

Here's the exact spec:

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/614/614682p1.html
"Detachable 2.5" HDD slot x 1"

They typically don't give specs like "x1" if they are referring to the hard drive itself...it's the number of connectors.

Sorry, IMO, the fact that "slot" is listed in the specifications tells me that the spec is for the interface for the hard drive. To construe it as there being a hard drive included doesn't make sense at all to me. (Again, this doesn't mean Sony can't change its mind).

They do, but I'm not sure how a "slot" would be detachable... ;) One must assume they mean there's a slot to insert a detachable hard drive.

There is different language than using "removable," but technically there's no way to tell for sure until we see the drive. Since they're using a smaller one, though, I assume it will be more "plug-in." Everything else seems to come bundled or would be a port add-on, and I imagine Sony doesn't really want people opening up a complex beast like the PS3, so...

My guess is there's a housing that would surround a conventional 2.5" hard drive (but wouldn't be something they sell separately--just bundled with systems or sold as a drive/housing package) that plugs into the reserved slot. You might have to remove a panel, but I can't imagine it would be more annoying than that.

They mentioned both a HDD slot and detachable HDD [slot].

Personally, I think Sony is just up in the air on the issue at the mement.

Maybe they will bundle the HDD with the Internet service? With how Live is shaping up (downloadable trailers, demos, content updates etc) I think it would be a big negative not to have a HDD.

And for that reason I believe the PS3 will have one. The alternative could be another messy PS2 HDD issue which really sucks for consumers.

I will be shocked if it is not in there.

Would it be kinda hard to program for a system if you don't even know if the consumer its good to have a HDD? Like the PS2. No company would use it right?
