Shenmue has sold over a million copies world-wide, and averages a very respectable 89.7% after 95 reviews at Gamerankings.com.

Anyone who thinks that is a flop needs to get their heads examined.

Well considering how much it cost to make, i can understand how some people might consider it a failure.

I consider that a failure of the developer, and not a failure of the game.

The game ended up in the hands of over 10% of the total DC userbase in lass than a year, over a million in total, and despite some claimes here, was received very well by both the press and the owners.

Just because the developers didn't know how to properly balance a budget doesn't mean the game was any worse.

Hey i didn't mean i agreed with him. But "somewhere in the pipeline" there was "failure". Be it developer's or whoever else. That i can kinda agree with.

I could agree with that as well, but it was the:

"Shenmue will go down in history as the biggest flop ever make.

It was so hype by Sega as the be all end all of video games, and it fell so short not only review wise but also sales wise as a flop."

That I disagreed with. It's just wrong.

in the end, all the companys make games to make their profit (or at least break even )
nobody spends millions for fun.
so every game who looses millions and millions in the end IS a flop .
their bank acount dont care if it scored 40% or 90% in reviews.

its all about the blim blims and the G's and the greens ...

So but Powderkeg does have a great point. If the game has received a 89.5 from over 95 reviews and it sold to over 10% of the user base then yeah it's NOT a flop.

So Hey69 in your eyes Enter The Matrix was one of the biggest games of the year when it came out. Sales is not the end all be all of if a game is a flop or not.

No, a flop would be the fact that it lost money to the company making it. ICO wasn't a flop - it sold like crap but it didn't lose Sony any money.
Shenmue cost some 80M to make (not too sure about the figure) and sold 1M copies. Meaning it lost SEGA a whole lot of money. That's a flop, commercially speaking, whether it was critically acclaimed or not. It wasn't a flop "for the gaming community" because it was a good game.

i'm a trader. if I lose money , its bad. if I loose a ton, its fucked up
no matter how fun or cool your product is.

Putting it that way, I'm now suddenly thinking about Duke Nukem Forever. One day, we'll find out how much money was tossed into that pile. I probably wouldn't have been thinking about it if I didn't see that thing recently about another engine switch.

That may be true, but look again at the original comment I addressed.

The game sold very well, and it received very high review marks.

It may have been a financial failure for the bean counters at SEGA, but it most definitely wasn't the flop claimed in the above statement.

Sega spended more on Shenmue for DC and was just as bad,but that doesn't mean Sega suck or Susuki san for that matter.

Shenmue is the greatest game ever made.

It also sold 1.3 Million copies worldwide, this is when the DC's worldwide userbase was around 5-6m units.

Shenmue was a flop. It didn't turn a profit, at least not one we've heard of. Isn't that the definition of a flop in the entertainment business? How do we call movies flops? If they fail to turn a profit. Reviewer remarks are subjective. It depends on the sites/people giving reviews and the target audience. But when you look at financial success, that's a nice, quantifiable metric. Shenmue is, by all accounts, a flop. It takes nothing away from what people think of the gameplay though. PEACE.

So how about this guys. It was a commercial FLOP, but still a great game.
