Dave Perry : PS3 is more powerful, 360 more comfortable.

People seem undecided on which of PS3 and Xbox 360 are more powerful. What do you think? Will they be very different machines to design games for?

Dave Perry: The PS3 is ultimately more powerful if you are willing to wait for programmers to master it. It's a bit like Path of Neo... Here we are at the end of the PS2 hardware cycle and suddenly we are the first game with Normal Mapping and we also demonstrated 1,500 Agent Smiths on screen at once. Meaning there's always some more juice to get squeezed out. The Xbox 360 on the other hand is much more comfortable to develop on and I expect to see programmers pushing it harder earlier. So I expect (like in a horse race) to see Xbox take off out the gate, but after a while, the PS3 overtakes. The good news is that there's no loser here, both machines rock.

Yeah this was posted in the Inq thread about X360 beating the PS3, but I dunno if that means it shouldn't get its own thread... although I can see this thread being locked by the end of today....

Edit: Decided to add my reaction to the quote-

It's good to see a dev not taking the bait and praising both systems especially since we don't even have final hardware for both. I do think his comments are interesting, and I'm curious as to how much time he's had with both systems. I'm going to bring out my pessimistic side and say that after hearing close to the exact same thing said with slightly different worse by devs in interviews, sometimes I wonder if they actually have an educated opinion on something or if they're just repeating what another dev has said because they haven't had time to formulate their own opinion.

Great quote. It seems to be the most obvious scenario with comparison between the two consoles. What should really be pulled from the quote though is his optimism for both consoles and how the PS3 WILL be harder to develop for (from his comments) but is still managable.

coming from a guy who spended millions and millions to create that crap matrix game? woah

Sega spended more on Shenmue for DC and was just as bad,but that doesn't mean Sega suck or Susuki san for that matter.

The difference is that Matrix game actually was crap while you just think Shenmue was crap :)

Just because his game was crap doesn't mean his points are not valid. You could know the hardware inside and out and still make crappy games. What is more important is how he came to his conclusions. Is he actually working on PS3 and XBOX360 hardware or is he just speculating based on what he has heard from others?

I think his points are valid, but I am still trying to think back to what was the last respectable game Dave Perry made; wasn't it like nearly ten years ago with MDK?

He owns the company making it..... Does that count.

It depends on if you prescribe to the theory that the higher up the management chain you are, the more you impede getting the product out. ;)

After reading his initial comments on the Revolution controller, I'm inclined to agree. Besides, he speaks PR quite fluently. Even after seeing what a mess Messiah's graphical engine turned out to be, I was still a firm believer in its RTDAT.

Shenmue will go down in history as the biggest flop ever make.

It was so hype by Sega as the be all end all of video games, and it fell so short not only review wise but also sales wise as a flop.

Sega realy let it drop with Shenmue, only sega fans dare to say Shenmue was a good game.

At least Matrix was spected to suck, almost all games based on movies suck or are very poor qiality wise, but unlike Shenmue financialy Matrix was a succes.

Shenmue sold over a million copies over a period when the DC had a userbase of under 10 million. That's good by anyones reckoning, even if Sega couldn't control the budget.

It's still one of my favourite games, and IMO a benchmark title and a superb game. If people have unrealistic expectations of a product that's not the product's fault. If that then prevents them from judging the product on its merits, again, that's not the product's fault.

Were did you get that from ????

Shenmue in Japan sold 150,000 copys and in US did better but not that great.

Them you most be from those sega lover as simple as that,it was very well know by the time it came how much of a let down it was,in the second one they improve but far from tripple A.

In fact the media from sites to magazines were all over it,that game should have been great but it turn wrong it was boring for the most part.

Many people can see past that game some love it to a point of calling it one of the best games ever make, which is far from true Shenmue was kill by his own hype.

WRONG! Shenmue sold a bit less than 400k copies in Japan, so i guess worldwide figure is about 1M.

Shenmue - 383,352 total sales
