If you guys got to sit down with ATI's Dave Orton, what questions would you want to ask him?

Ask him to explain a bit more about the cash they recently raised (IINM it's about half a billion).

Ask him to give us an official ATI roadmap :)

Mr. Orton,

when is R500 coming, what is the Xbox 2 graphics processor based on, does it have embedded memory.

what is the Nintendo N5 / GCNext graphics processor based on--or is it completely built-for-Nintendo, like Flipper, and RCP before it were.

Some observers feel that NV lost its performance leadership in part due to spreading themselves too thin with Xbox, motherboard chipsets, etc. As ATI continues to diversify your efforts with initiatives like Xbox2, what are you doing to make sure the same thing doesn't happen to you?

What about the motherboard chipset division?
Nforce2 for AMD Athlons was a huge success for Nvidia and it seems after the failed first successor, they'll hit again with its updated version, the Nforce3-250(Gb).
Question raises itself: do ATI have any serious plans regarding the future AMD platforms? I understand that ATI, after pocketed Intel's licensing partnership, tried to 'flow' the OEM-market with cheap and en masse' available products first, then came the Radeon 9100 (with CAT4.3 Surroundview, etc) but what's the next step and what about AMD? Will ATI challenge Nvidia on the retail market, especially on the A64/FX motherboard market?

Edit: typos

1) AGP for all intents and purposes has been an unmitigated failure imo as far as providing real and tangible benefits to gamers. What real and tangible benefits will the shift to PCI-E bring to the videogame scene, and will it take long for those benefits to show up?

2) What will officially be the last AGP supported part before everything is moved to PCI-E?

As much as you can, could you state ATI's overall design philosophy and goals moving forward in hardware implementation and API featureset? Could you indicate how the aspects of currently announced (as of the response to this being published, if it is) products fit into that philosophy?

I would ask him how he feels about the 3d tech sector, what he likes/dislikes, what he is looking forward to, what kind of goals the idustry should be aiming for, etc... I always like to ask about the person in situations like this because it is both very interesting and generally has implications for the future. You are also much more likely to get a person to really open up by asking about them personally, and not just throwing technical questions thier way. My two cents...

Will he change how things are done now or keep things the same?
Will the Radeon class of cards will have dual DVI?
Will they support more then 2 monitors like Matrox ( like 3 to 4 at the same time)?

Here're a few more.

Ask him about the kind of work they are doing with MS wrt Longhorn (actually, more specifically DX-Next). No need for specifics since he probably can't/won't say but any useful snippets would be good. Kinda like a "the way forward for the API" question.

Ask him about the future of handheld devices and whether ATI has any plans for it.

Ask him about the worrying (trend) of ever higher power requirements for video chips targetted for the PC.

Ask him to comment on the NV40 :). Actually, ask him to comment on SM3.0 vis-a-vis SM2.0 and what parts of SM3.0 should be focussed on. (let's hope we get this interview live prior to a SM3.0 ATI part!)

Ask him to provide an insight into the priorities/importance of their various development/research departments wrt "out-of-the-box" features (like AA and AF) that gamers can enjoy immediately compared to takes-longer-to-see-in-games technologies like clever use of shaders. How does ATI determine how much resources are set aside for each?

I'm sure DO will give away information on unannounced products.

I'm sure he'll also give us scoop on major strategic decisions the company is going to make in the near future.

Company filed so they have the option to use the instruments described in the filing to fund a variety of things, operations, acquisitions, stock buyback etc... AFAIK they have not utilized it.

As others have said, I'd be interested in hearing his initial impressions of the NV40.

I'd also like to hear his thoughts on the business side of the NV40. Thoughts on yields, margins etc... i.e. whether or not the Ultra/Non-Ultra are going to make any money or if nVIDIA is going to eat it this round to gain back mindshare.

What changed in the driver developement team since the Catalyst 3.4 to it's current state?

What are some of the changes in driver developement that are going to aid in making people more excited about the R420?

What is the attitude/motivation towards Direct X 10? Are they eager, optimistic, concern?

Where in the market do they see themselves in 5 years?

Where does he stand on 64bit tech?

Does he believe Microsoft XP 64bit will make an impact on gaming? If so, what kind of impact?

Where does he stand on the console market? Does he believe they will co exist for sometime to come or does he believe that consoles will become powerful enough to compete with PC's?

Diversification is the name of the game today. What other fields (mobo chipsets, phones, PDA's, memory, etc.) has ATi considered getting involved in or has made plans to enter into?

M$ & ATi appear to have a solid working relationship. How are things with AMD & Intel? Any plans to involve IBM in any new ventures in the future?

Could ya tell Terry to implement an ATi form of 'Digital Vibrance'? I sure do miss the choice of using it. 8)

Any relation to the wrestling Ortons from Texas? :D

Ask why the R400 was canned and how the R420 came about.

Ask when we are likely to see the fast-14 technology in action.

Ask about adoption of .11 micron and .09 micron process technology.

Ask about what PCI-Express will bring to the table since AGP 8x didn't increase performance.

Ask about ATIs integrated chipset plans.

Ask where he expects 3D Graphics to go.

Ask about using the graphics card to accellerate non-graphics tasks such as databases.

Ask about using AIW cards to display digital cable signals.

Ask if there are plans to add video toaster like features to video cards.

In the future which will be a larger source of revenue for ATI: PC graphics, console graphics, or mobile graphics (cell phones).
