There are millions of cars sold every year with back seat entertainment "for the kids". I believe that consoles aren't too far away from being integrated into them. All the requirements for this are starting to fall into place. If there's already a T.V in the back seat, playing games is just as easy as watching a movie.

Take for instance, the Wii:

*Wireless controllers
*Wireless networking for the transfer of music/saved games etc.
*Low power consumption
*Small size means it can be easily packaged.
*Best bet would be to introduce a model that can play DVD's and replace the kid's dvd unit

Or the PS3, which I think will be a couple of years more down the track

*Blu ray unit
*No chance of kids accidently hitting each other with the controllers and starting a fight.
*Complete multimedia centre with wireless and a H.D.D so it can integrate with the car audio system as well.

But probably too big and too hot to package in a car.

Pretty much the same reasoning applies to the Xbox unit, sans the Blu ray currently. They do have the wildcard of being based in the united states, so they have better access to more manufacturers than the other console makers.

I think that the reasoning to include the consoles in the cars are pretty clear. Anyone who has an Xbox in the back seat will probably have an Xbox for the lounge, heck even if it's the next-generation from now. If backwards compatibility is maintained, then it pretty much will be a slam dunk between the home and the car. 5 million consoles sold in cars per year, almost guarentees that those people will have the same console in their home. Heck, you could even package it with the car and include it in the finance.

So what do ya think? I hope this is a good one, I've made some bad quality posts recently. OMG! So, not up to the standards of B3D.

Yeah, I could see this. Even just the Wii VC or XBL Arcade stuff would be good entertainment for a car (perhaps better suited for that environment), and can be stored on a flash drive.

However, the trend is toward smaller vehicles and away from the Ford Expeditions of the past, and I haven't seen much sign of in car entertainment systems in smaller vehicles yet. I think you may be targeting a class of vehicle that is on its way out.

And we certainly don't need Blu-Ray for 7" screens.

One word: Minivan! :) People still have kids.

Well Blu-ray is just to be compatible with the home entertainment stuff. People don't want to buy a 2nd disk for the car as well. But yeah, I know it's kinda not needed really.

Plus my favorite feature: hard coat. They also have a smaller (8cm) Blu-ray form factor these days for home videos.

Naturally, digital download is another option (iPod and PSP)

I would think that the future of in-car video lies with hard disk storage. Music is already moving that way.

There are already console ICE's aren't there? I've seen PlayStations hooked up to cars before now, though dunno quite where. Found this...

Take for instance, the Wii:
Motion controls in a moving car, at a distance of 6"?!

So what do ya think?
Sorry, but I think the handhelds have this area covered nicely. A DS or PSP is going to get more mileage and be cheaper than a back-seat Wii or whatever.

Hmmm, some premium models might, but most wont I think. The first thing is that certainly in europe the distances coverd are far less smaller than in the US. People wont need a entertainment set because they dont spend alot of time in the car anyway in 99,9% of the time. Also there is the factor of price. Most adults/parents wont be willing to spend hundreds of euro's more on something like a console in the car. If they want entertainment they might as well buy a DS/psp for the fraction of the price and that is also usable out of the car while with a in car system your spending alot of money on something you'll rarely use.

Also there is the group of people who would use it. I think that would only be very small. Small kids? You dont want them going mad if they cant win their game in the back. Not to mention small kids probably dont care or dont get it anyway. Than you'll have the 10-18 group that will care, but how much time do they spend in the car a year? I europe most wont even spend 1 hour as the longest drive a week in the car (I'm not counting short drives as nobody will be playing a game for 10 or 15 minutes, you'll be there by the time you can finally play).

Perhaps this is something for the PSP2 or the DS2 to have.

It did sound like a good idea at the time! :p

*sigh*

edit: maybe even apple, seeing as everyone and their dog is including Ipod interfaces in their cars. This is for their "mythical" game machine. :)

Don't you have to buy multiple games for multiplayer ? Something like Mario Kart can entertain up to 4 at once.
