Crysis 2 PC edition OT

Yeah, wow. That looks so bad, so 1999.

They went to great lengths to save perfomance for consoles reducing geometry, texture budget and DIP calls. To bad they didn't put in something better for PC as such things that make or break console versions barely have any impact on PC HW.

There's even a worse pic of a 2D shellcasing that looks like a used brown condom of probably 128x128 res. I'll see if I can find the screenshot.

For a laugh (from GAF).

Didn't they leave out parallax mapping altogether?

Yes though several textures seem prepared for POM as they look ankward being flat. That or they are prepared for tesselation as they got "depth" but without POM or tesselation they just look awfully wrong.

I thought the quality if inland water was improved drastically, the ocean waves have been pared back, but then I wouldn't expect the ocean waves in NYC to be as varied and wild as the ones in some unknown island cut off from the rest of the world

The problem is the subpar shading method, simplistic FFT algorithm, simple wave blending, low geometry budget and simplistic cheap reflections. The sum is worse looking water than Crysis/Warhead. In the document I posted (thats been removed ironically) lead Crytek graphics programmer explianed what PC would have for water. The water shown in that screenshot was better than Crysis with rich waves, highres reflections and much better shading and water texture bump layer.

In any case, the water interactivity has improved a lot....at the very least.

Though going by the document it could have been better if they for some reason would have removed better method.

incoming massive DX11 High Res Texture pack? :p
hope they paid the modder more than BioWare did for DA2

One would hope especially with Nvidia supposefully having a finger in and GPUs with 1280-1536MB VRAM. Game as is now tops at max 600MB VRAM @1080 "extreme" from what I've read. Streaming is also AFAIK disabled for PC.

Fingers, dots, spider "teeth". Looks like you got a spider with long body infront of you.

Ok, I kinda see it...though to me the left looks a bit like my HK P30 while the right looks like a spider. :)

This what happens when MGPU is used.

game looks great!! have a 480GTX, seems to run oki doki @ EXTREME setting and 1440x900. Only complaint...some textures are a bit low res close up...hoped for more with respect to textures...everything else so far is superb!

I am a bit struggling with the open world character of the game...hope that the story gets a little denser during campaign, but I have just started :)

NV 'FXAA' sub-pixel edge AA filter present in "extreme" mode.

"r_PostMSAAEdgeFilterNV = 1"

I wish I still had my 8800GTX to try this out on. I wonder if it would run faster than Crysis 1 / Warhead on it.

Though I haven't bought the game yet anyway. I'm probably going to wait for the inevitable day it drops to $40 like Dead Space 2 did so quickly. What a waste of money that game was. I probably only got about halfway through it before I succumbed to extreme boredom. Yet more DX9 in 2011 "goodness" there too.

Just think: if there are still DX9 games next year that will mean that DX9 has been in use for 10 years! Direct X 3-8 only spanned about 7 years combined!

Considering the game "requires" graphics such as the 3850 or 9600GT, do you guys think Crytek used DX9 trying to rope in those who are still on XP, or because of the commonality with the 360's version of DX? I think Crytek should've just gone the Just Cause 2 route but going with DX11 as the target API. After playing the game, I don't see DX11 as the "fix" to anything as clearly under DX9 Crysis 1 was much more advanced in terms of graphical features.

Gamers still on XP but with hardware capable of playing C2 are few and far between. The decision to go with DX9 was most likely due to the consoles being the lead platforms. But as someone pointed out in the old thread, the PC exclusive Shogun 2 also has a DX9 path, which is mind boggling. Would love to hear Crytek's reasoning on this.

There's also the possibility that the decision to go DX9 was made before they realized how successful Win7 would be. At least I suspect that could've been the case with Shogun 2.

Much less than 10 years, to be fair. DX9c with Shader Model 3.0 is quite a major branch at the end, so I guess it won't run on all DX9 hardware.

Or as a multiplatform licensed engine, they had something to prove...

If their goal was to prove that they don't care too much about PC any more, they've succeeded. As a long time Crytek fan I still hope that a killer DX11 patch will be released and prove me wrong, but the reality is setting in now and I am very

With all the (mostly justifiable imo) backlash against C2 and the (unjustified) bitching over Crysis, I wouldn't be surprised if this were Crytek's last PC game - which would be a shame not only because we wouldn't get any more Crytek PC games, but because they will have gone out on such a lame note after a history of total awesomeness.

This is true, but consider that we had at least 1 major PC title released last year that used SM2.0 !

Well got stuck in my first glitch of the game. I really hate it when you get nabbed by a bug and your checkpoint is a fair bit back...you have no idea if you'll escape the glitch the second, third or fourth time :(

After you scan the biomass in the alien pod you're to escape through a window and get a cutscene, but I went into cutscene mode (no weapons) before I got through the window and then couldn't go through the window no matter how I tried. Known glitch.

Considering POM, water quaity rendering and more has been clamped to lower detail levels I am not surprised. Seems Crytek wanted to minimize SKU differences to much to most likely prove consoles can match PC.
After pondering it a bit more, I suspect they had planned to use fancier reflections but couldn't get them running well on the consoles so they haphazardly tossed in the cube maps at the last minute, as there are many spots where the game would have looked better without reflections at all rather than the crappy ones there now.
