Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Computer Architecture Group (CAG) collaborated with IBM and Sony to help students learn multicore programming on the IBM Cell BE using the Playstation 3. Here is the course description:
This course will serve as a serious introduction to multicore programing in a fun and exciting context. The course will cover fundamental properties of emerging parallel processing multicores with an emphasis on Cell processors that power the PS3. The course will provide students the opportunity to develop exciting projects directly on the PS3 gaming console, and in effect learn about parallel programming in a fun and challenging environment. Students will compete in teams of 4-5 participants for the best PS3 project, with exciting prizes awarded to the best projects.
