core 2 vs p4 speed question

First off i know this is an awkward question
but if you had to rate a single core of a core2 (any one e6600 for eample) against a p4 northwood what would you class it as

for example a sinlge core of an e6600 would be what ? the same as a p4 3ghz? 3.5ghz? 4ghz? more?

Intel's own numbers show best-case performance gains for C2 over Netburst to be > 100% at the same clockspeed, and the gaming performance shown @ TR bears those numbers out.

i thought it was media where the core 2 really shines

anyway thanks for the answers i expected a load of " thats a bloody stupid quesion dav :D "

On my own boxes, the 2.67GHz Core2 (unoverclocked) totally wtfpwns my 3GHz P4 even in single-threaded apps. There's absolutely no contest whatsoever, the P4 is totally outclassed.

It's still more than decent for normal windows tasks though. Hyperthreading makes multitasking feel snappy and responsive most of the time, and generally when it doesn't it's harddrive swapping getting in the way.

Peace.

I noticed over the weekend that my T60's 2.0Ghz Core Duo (take notice: this isn't a Core 2 Duo) ranks a 4.8 in Vista's Windows Experience Index.

My s478 Prescott 3.0ghz overclocked and watercooled to 4.2Ghz ranks a 4.6.

im not much of a benchmark person but the benchmark mode in x2-the threat with a 3ghz northwood + 7600gt i used to get 90fps with a q6600 + 7600gt i get 174fps never imagined that...

I wonder if the game scales with cores or if thats pure single threaded performance?

i ran it at 1280x1024
automatic quality
bumpmapping
fsaa off
shadows off
eax on

fsaa + ani set to app in the driver

ps: my mate ran it in a pentium 4 3.2ghz (dual core) with a 8800gts same settings except he has 8xfsaa + 16ani forced in the driver and he got 142fps

ps: its from 2003 so i doubt its multi core aware

I have a Pentium E2140 (a Core 2 Duo E4xxx with only 1MB of L2 cache) outperforming a Pentium D 805 ("Netburst"-based dual-core).
Funny thing is, even when running at the lower EIST clock (1.2GHz), it easily walks past the stock 2.66GHz Pentium D 805 in pretty much everything i throw at it.

Didn't even bother checking them against my E6600 and the two Q6600's.

On my 3.2 Ghz P4 I was getting about 30 fps with a 8800GS at max graphics and 1440 by 900.

With a 2.67 Ghz Core 2 Duo I'm getting 120 fps in the same area.

Mind you I have faster ram now 400mhz vs 800mhz
