Would a stripped down windows gaming OS be a viable option for game makers?

lets say everygame has this os code on the dvd disc . What you basicly would get is a
PC turned into a console .
* bootup with gamedvd
* bootup from within windows where you shutoff from windows and automaticly restart in the new OS

advantage:- less overhead in memory and cpu usage
- better game performance
- other things .. :)

hm, ok not really fitting in the console forums... if possible move it please

That would be a nightmare trying to have drivers for every hardware config out there

besides most of the problems with the OS bottlenecking gaming is supposed to be fixed in vista

have you tried once some live-cd? normally they are not fast at booting. on fixed hw, they can be fast, as they don't have to care about anything. on pc's, they have to scan for all sort of hardware, check everything, and load the stuff needed then from disk. not to say any disk could support all hardware (impossible).

Instead of the OS on every DVD (which would take up possibly valuable space and couldn't be updated) would be a state of the OS which would disable all non gaming related functionality (a "gaming" shell) when launching a game. The running non-gaming related services could be just ended or put into a "sleep" mode taking minimal or no resources. When the game ends, the OS wakes back up and restarts the other services.

edit: Or the pc could reboot into the mode and the OS loads up minimal resources for gaming. This would allow the OS to be easily updated and would make it the same for each and every game.

The real question is how much performance would that actually gain you over a clean Vista build?

I was fine with DOS. Lets go back to that. It only took me 1 year to figure out how to get my handheld black & white scanner to work. Worst tech support Ever.

I always think if it would be feasable to have a gamers install option with no gui just command prompt like dos with all necessary gaming drivers installed.
