Hang on a second though. Can you not achieve the same effect using a series of multiplies in pixel shader 2.0?
You make it look like PS is becoming obsolete for high quality rendering. I know it isn't, what I am trying to say is that there has to be a way to use PS to get the same effect as the image on the right.
I haven't worked with PS yet so you will have to excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject.
