Chernobyl - 18 years later

I had to stop a couple of pages in. Those photos are really disturbing. We always talk about Chernobyl in the abstract, but I don't think people in general have really examined the full impact of it. Thanks for the link Harlequin. :)

I know saying this makes you vastly unpopular among some people, but apart from the thirtyish people who died as a direct result of the explosion and initial radiation the worst consequence of the Chernobyl accident was probably the largely unnecessary mass evacuation.

What they did was to establish a radiation threshold, and any area exhibiting higher levels of radiation was evacuated. Nothing wrong with that - if they had chosen a reasonable threshold level. The one they did choose was so ridiculously low that if we used it today large parts of Sweden would have to be evacuated - just because of natural radiation from the bedrock.

Better safe than sorry someone might say, but in this case I do not agree, because we are sorry. The empty cities and dolls on the tables are a real tragedy, but not one primarily caused by radiation.

Naturally I don't mean that the Chernobyl accident wasn't a Bad Thing, but the colossal overreaction didn't exactly make things better.

maybe your right

BUT

that figure of 81.6 µR/hr is 18 years on - as the author says , a few years ago is was twice that , and in april 1986 was hundreds of times higher than that - hundres of times is 816 µR/hr +

whats scary though - is there are places in the USA which have that level of radiation `normally`.

But its not that background µR/hr count that worrying , its the heavy isotopes which first occured and contaminated the vehicles - i expect there count will be much MUCH higher - even now.

Right. For example, some isotopes are considered safe as long as ithey're outside of your body, but they may be poisonous if you ingested them. There were likely many different such isotopes near the Chernobyl site at that time.

Today we have a video game being released concerning the occurances at the site. Honestly, to a verying degree, this bothers me.

It bothers you that there is a game that accurately shows what chernobal looks like today? I just wanted to make sure i read you right. Im actually curious as to what it looks like, and since ill never go there myself, this is a nice way to get a good perspective.

No, its the unnecessary murder which takes place in the game while in persuit of the area's scientific wealth. To me its like looting a tomb.

-btw what is accurate about suggesting mutant humans and freakish beasts now inhabit the terrain?

Oh, so its a Resi Evil kind of game (never heard of it before, unless it's a famous game everyone knows but i missed the point where it said "Chernobyl"). Yeah now it bothers me too.

I am sure the workers of the facility would want to be remembered (or for that matter their families) as green, slimy, mutant cannibals.

If they don't, then they shouldn't eat anybody.

It wouldnt be a very long game. The towers fell, what, an hour or 2 after the planes hit. Not a game I would purchase, but I guess to each his own.

But then again, we have plenty of WW2 games and other never and older wars. After it gets old enough it's history enough to make a game about it. I mean, I'm sure somebody that fought in WW2 could be offended by making a game from references to times and places where he were fighting, but most people don't have very strong ties to it anymore. Today it would be very bad taste to do a 9/11 game, but in 20 years people probably won't feel as bad about it, except maybe for those who had personal losses. I wouldn't be too surprised if there was a 9/11 assault level in UT2025.

The thing is, WW2 games ARE bad taste... The fact that it happened 60 years ago doesn't make them any less tasteless...

Even a game based on the French revolution would be bad taste.

Of course, they would not be tasteless if they were done properly.

A game could be based on real facts and not being totally tasteless if the game portrays the events in a serious and accurate manner, and if the objective of the game itself is NOT "SHOOT THE F**KING ENEMY BASTARDS!!!!!!!!!" like they all are at the moment...
