Some of you may have noticed by now that there is a new sub-forum in the Embedded 3D section entitled 'CellPerformance@B3D.' Directed semi-independently from the rest of the site by Mike Acton, it will be serving as the new home for non-gaming Cell-centric discussion for both his website and this forum.
For those here not familiar with Mike, he is the director of engine development at Insomniac games, and also runs and maintains CellPerformance.com. I interviewed him last year in an article for PSINext while he was the senior architect of High Moon Studios' Cell research team, and he has been among the most prolific advocates of the architecture outside of STI itself, with numerous lectures concerning the architecture under his belt in both academic and industry settings.
There has been some confusion in the past in terms of whether non-gaming Cell threads were appropriate for the console technology forum; due to the topic synergies in the past, this did indeed turn into a sort of de facto Cell forum, but from here on out if it's not gaming-centric, CellPerformance will be the place to put such threads. On the flip side, I want to *heavily* emphasize that CellPerformance is not a subset of the console forums - it is a technical forum with a focus on Cell development and programming, and not a section where the normal console-style discussions (either pro or against) will be tolerated. Mike will have broad latitude in how that particular forum is managed, and if a post is considered 'noise,' its deletion can be expected.
Here are the basic ground rules for posts there, as per Mike:

Here are the basic ground rules for posts there, as per Mike:
WHAT IS ON-TOPIC IN THIS FORUM?
As the name would suggest, Cell processor related performance issues are the main topic of conversation. But as a general guideline, this is a programmer-centric forum and the kinds of things I'd expect to see discussed here are:
Threads related to...
1. Articles posted on CellPerformance.com
2. PPU and SPU programming in general.
3. PPU and SPU optimizations in particular.
4. Designing code and data for Cell targeted systems.
5. Programming for PS3/Linux.
6. Cell related news.
7. General optimizations that may also be applicable to the Cell.
8. Projects, code and code-snippets for the Cell.
WHAT IS OFF-TOPIC IN THIS FORUM?
Foremost, this should be a forum of the practice of programming the Cell. The Cell is well-documented publically and the tools and platforms for programming it are also available to the public at-large.
However, the specific details of programming retail games for the Playstation 3 are not public. These conversations are off-topic, and certain discussions are not acceptable, including:
Discussions on...
1. The development utilities and libraries available to official PS3 developers.
2. Reverse engineering those same libraries.
3. Reverse engineering of any PS3 hardware not publically disclosed.
This is also not a forum for discussing Playstation 3 games - there are other more appropriate forums available here for that.
